————————————————————————
Makoto Naegi was prone to nightmares. That was something that had just always happened to him— and he hardly had any control over it.
But, truly... he was never really bothered or inconvenienced by it. It was just something that scared him for a few moments, but he was quickly able to fall back asleep.
Even as Nagito and him had gotten together, he was still able to stay calm and not cause too much of a commotion whenever he had one. He might shuffle around in the bed a couple times, but he had no problem going back to sleep afterwords.
But he guessed something was different about tonight. It couldn't have helped that he fell asleep regressed, too.
He had a typical nightmare, one that appeared in his dreams more often than not. The sight of pink splattered everywhere, the look of the life lost in his friend's eyes. Dead, executed! All for the hope of escaping into a world of havoc, one that could never go back to normal.
Makoto hated these nightmares the most. The visual of all his classmates dead, the horror of being forced to watch the executions replay in his mind over and over again.
It was a nightmare. But it was real, and perhaps that's what pained him the most—
Makoto finally awoke, and he did so with a start, his eyes soon opening as he loosened his grip on the blanket, taking in his surroundings.
...Oh. It was just a nightmare. Really, he should have expected that, but he can't bring himself to differentiate dreams from reality.
But... why was he still scared? Why was his heart still racing? He... he should be calming down now, everything should be fine because it was just a dream...
The vivid display of bodies was still fresh in his mind, and he felt tears fill his eyes in pure terror.
Makoto was scared. He was absolutely horrified.
And before he knew it, the tears spilt over, streaming down his face as sobs left his breathing uneven and shaky.
There was blood, everywhere! His friends were gone and he was never going to see them again. He couldn't have even done anything to stop it— believe him! He would have if he could! He was helpless!
Makoto felt sobs rack his body, and he could hardly get air into his lungs with how hard he was crying. It was dark, and it was scary!
He was alone, he was completely and utterly—
"Makoto?"
Makoto's gaze shot over to the one beside him after hearing Nagito's half-asleep voice, which confirmed that Nagito was awake. His eyes were open and he was in the process of sitting up.
Makoto felt his vision blur over with tears once more as his lower lip quivered. He wanted nothing more than to be held, and promised that everything was okay.
"'Ko," Makoto whimpered out, and the nickname was all it took for Nagito to blink and slide over to Makoto.
"Hey... what's the matter?" He murmured to him, wrapping an arm around him and letting Makoto lean into him.
Makoto trembled, and he didn't respond, simply clinging tight onto Nagito as the tears only kept coming, his sobs not yet dying down.
"Oh, my hope..." Nagito only gave a sigh, before offering a small smile and beginning to run his fingers through Makoto's hair, "Cry it out. I'm right here."
And so Nagito stayed there with Makoto, whispering reassurances to him and encouraging him to let it out, promising him that he'd stay right here.
The two stayed there for some time— Makoto's cries evident as Nagito held him close, hushing him and hoping to calm him down. It truly pained Nagito to see someone he loved so much hurt like this, but...
All he could do was be there, right? So, he would.
And, eventually, Makoto's sobs did quiet down, only leaving room for sniffles and shaky breaths.
When Nagito was sure Makoto was alright, that his crying was only reduced to sniffles, that was when he began to speak.
"Do you want to tell me what happened, angel?" He asked, keeping his voice soft.
Makoto only wiped off some of the tear stains with his sleeve, nodding.
"Bad dream," He said, "Was scared, and... and then..."
His voice trailed off into a whine at the end as he buried his face closer into Nagito, hardly able to put it into words.
Nagito hummed.
"Ah, that must've been really scary," He told him, "But you were really brave, bud. And it'll be okay— the dream's over. You don't have to be scared anymore."
Makoto did not feel very brave, but the praise from his caregiver made a small smile form on his face, and he sighed.
" 'Kay. 'Ank you for stayin' with me."
Nagito nodded, leaning down to press a soft kiss on the top of Makoto's head.
"Anytime, love. You know I'm always here for you."
A moment of silence passed over the two, as Nagito sat there with Makoto pressed up close against his side, stroking his hair and feeling comfort at the warmth they shared.
"Ah... it is still late, though," Nagito reminded Makoto, "We should probably head back to bed, hmm?"
Makoto still seemed a bit uneasy at the thought, nervously glancing over to the side of the room..
Nagito only gave him a reassuring smile.
"Don't worry. I'll stay with you, okay? You won't have another nightmare," Nagito affirmed, and Makoto nodded.
"...'Kay. If you say so."
And so, with that, the two laid back down, Makoto leaning close to Nagito's chest and Nagito keeping his arms wrapped tightly around Makoto.
"Goodnight, my hope," Nagito murmured to him softly, and Makoto giggled.
"Night night. Love you."
Nagito felt his heart swell with adoration, unable to quiet his own share of laughs.
"I love you too, kid. Very much."
And so, with that, the two returned back to their much needed rest, the moonlight pouring in through the window as they were tied together by the feelings they shared.
And, well, when Makoto awoke in the morning with the knowledge that he didn't have another nightmare? He was ecstatic!
Of course, Nagito was, as well.
