"You know, Maki-Roll," Kaito panted as they jogged around the courtyard together, "We can take a break if you're feeling small."
Maki felt her cheeks flush, and it wasn't from the workout she was doing. She couldn't tell if Kaito was offering to take a break because he himself was exhausted, or because she genuinely hadn't been performing as well and he suspected she regressed.
Not that she had been subtle about it. As soon as the two arrived in the courtyard together, she'd been chewing on her thumb in place of a pacifier (Kaito had to gently take her hands out of her mouth). She also hadn't spoken much, her replies usually a simple "uh huh" or "uh uh". Those had sufficed then. They likely would now.
"Uh uh," She said, her own breaths sharp from the jogging.
"If you insist," Kaito gasped, and Maki had to force back a giggle at how out of breath he was. He'd probably really make her stop, then!
The two continued running around the courtyard for a while, the clattering of their shoes and the intakes of breath the only thing heard.
Soon, though, Kaito glanced over to Maki's direction, halting when he saw what was on the ground.
"Maki, look out!"
Maki almost stopped to glance back at Kaito when suddenly she felt something get caught on her shoe, and from there she tripped, falling on the cold, hard floor.
A burst of pain shot through her knees, as well as her palms. She winced, embarrassment yet also hurt flooding her senses as she hesitantly raised her hands to assess the damage.
They were scraped. Not badly, but blood pricked at some of the wounds. And her knees couldn't have looked any better.
"Maki, are you okay?" Kaito was quick to ask, kneeling down beside her with a look of worry on his face.
Maki swallowed, her throat tightening and her eyes filling with tears. Her hands and knees stung— badly— and she glanced away at the small amount of blood.
"I-It hurts," She choked out. She meant it to be an explanation, but as tears spilled down her cheeks, it really sounded more like a whine.
"Oh, honey..." Kaito frowned in sympathy, "I know. I'm sorry. Can I see your hands? I just want to check them."
She sniffled, but complied, allowing him to gently take hold of her hands.
He carefully looked them over, making sure she was alright.
"Ah... just a light scrape," He said, meeting her gaze with a small smile, "You're going to be just fine, sunshine."
Maki was still trembling, but at the reassurance from Kaito, she felt her heart rate slow down, as well as her tears subside (for the most part). If anything, his words of comfort almost made her slip further, not that she was very old anyway.
"How about I take you inside and patch you up?" Kaito offered.
"'Kay..." Maki said.
So, with that, Kaito took her hand and stood up, leading her back towards the dormitories. Upon her request, they went into his dorm, entering the bathroom. She sat down while he shuffled through his drawers and grabbed a few things, before then putting a cloth under cool water.
"Okay, I'm going to clean it with this," He said, the cloth in his hand. She nodded, so he tenderly pressed it against her knee. She winced, causing him to murmur a soft apology.
Once the wounds had been cleaned off, he dug through the drawers some more, finding some bandages.
"Alright," Kaito turned back to her, "Now, I'm gonna—"
"...Medicine."
"Huh?"
Maki frowned.
"Need medicine. Help the wound."
Kaito gave an 'ah' of understanding, as if he was about to go find what she was looking for himself when she stood up, searching for a moment and pulling out exactly what he needed.
He awkwardly chuckled. Her assassin training probably taught her a bit about healing, too.
So, he dabbed a bit of ointment on his finger and rubbed it onto the wound, making sure he didn't press too hard to irritate or hurt her.
After that, he carefully wrapped some bandages around her knees (and her hands).
"There!" He grinned as he finished wrapping the final bandage, "Good as new, Maki-R—"
Kaito was cut off when she stood up, wrapping her arms around him and leaning close into his chest.
"'Ank you," She murmured.
Kaito could practically feel his heart jump out of his chest at the (admittedly rare) display of affection from her. He wrapped his own arms around her as well, a warm feeling enveloping him.
"Of course, kiddo," He said, "Are you feeling any better?"
"Uh huh," She nodded, "Bu' 'm sleepy."
Kaito gave a hum of acknowledgment. They had gotten in a pretty good workout before all of this happened. When she tripped, that was probably even more tiring.
"I bet you are. It's been a long night, huh?"
Maki nodded into his chest.
"Well..." Kaito said, "I can take you back to your dorm, if you want me to?"
"Uh uh," She pouted, "Stay."
Kaito blinked.
"You want to stay in here?" He asked, and she nodded once more. He didn't think it would be possible for him to say no to her.
"Okay," Kaito said, "Come on, then. Let's get you to bed."
He walked to his room with her, their hands tightly interlaced. When he got into bed, she soon followed, pressing up close against his side while he wrapped an arm around her.
"Goodnight, Maki-Roll," Kaito murmured, "Sorry you got hurt."
"'S okay..." She mumbled, "You made it better. Like doctor."
He chuckled.
"Well, I'm not so sure an astronaut can be a doctor," He said, leaning in to give her a peck on the top of her head, "I'm glad you're okay."
"Love you."
Kaito pulled her closer. He loved her more than he could express.
"I love you too. Sweet dreams."
