With Shuichi's status as a detective, and Kokichi's tendency to lie and cause mischief, people often wondered what brought them together. They'd been close for a while now, something that initially surprised both of their classmates.

But there was a reason for it. The truth was, the both of them were age regressors. That one similarity brought them together in more ways than one.

Kokichi found out one night when Shuichi was swamped with detective work. He'd been working for hours, his desk cluttered with papers as he tried to string the pieces of the case together.

He hadn't eaten, he hadn't slept, he probably hadn't even used the bathroom for hours. It was only natural for him to get overwhelmed.

So when Kokichi casually strolled into Shuichi's unlocked dormitory (which just proved how frazzled he was), he was surprised to find him panicked, crying, and he quickly realized, small.

Kokichi had knelt beside him, taking his hands in his own and promising he'd be alright. That Kokichi wasn't going to tell anyone, and somewhere in the conversation... he admitted he was a regressor, too.

They'd looked after each other ever since.

Which led them back to the present. Shuichi had regressed after a long day of school. He was sitting on the floor of Kokichi's room, playing with some blocks. They were the kinds where you had to match the shape to the slot.

Honestly, Kokichi was happy to see him calm. Shuichi hadn't regressed in quite a while, so to finally see him so comfortable and small was a pleasant sight to see.

"Whatcha doin' there?" Kokichi knelt down in front of Shuichi, his eyes lingering a little too long on the pastel blocks.

Shuichi smiled.

"Block!" He cheered excitedly, clinking the block against the plastic slot (admittedly, the wrong one).

Kokichi chuckled, but it sounded rather dull. As he thought about it more, he realized that he wanted to play with blocks, too. He wanted to feel that child-like sense of wonder and comfort, not having to worry about bigger responsibilities.

...And it didn't take him long to realize he was nearing the fine line of regression.

He shook his head as if to clear his thoughts. No. They had an agreement. Kokichi looked after Shuichi when he was small, and Shuichi looked after Kokichi when he was small. He couldn't just regress and make this about himself.

"Hey, I think you're putting that in the wrong spot," He told Shuichi instead to distract himself.

Shuichi glanced up from the block.

"Huh?" He tilted his head, watching with wide, curious eyes as Kokichi gently took his hand to the right slot. When the block fell into place, Shuichi giggled, clapping his hands together.

"See? And then the star one..." Kokichi found himself reaching for the star block, chewing on his lower lip in concentration and putting the block in the star slot. The fuzziness that had clouded his thoughts almost made him reach for another one, the blocks fun to play with. However, he forced himself to pull his hand back.

Shuichi seemed to notice the tense expression on his face, though, so he tilted his head.

"Kichi okay?" He asked.

Kokichi would have liked to say he was okay, but truthfully, he felt so stressed out. Today had been so overwhelming, and he was stressing himself out even more by not allowing himself to regress.

"'M okay," He murmured quietly, "Just... tired."

He tried to mask his exhaustion, picking up a block and handing it to Shuichi as a distraction, but he wasn't having it. He frowned, crossing his arms.

"Nuh uh! Sad!" He pointed accusatorily at him, which made Kokichi chuckle, "Sad! Why?"

"It's not that I'm sad, I just..." Kokichi sighed, fidgeting with the sleeve of his shirt, "It's... been a long day. I feel small."

Upon the silence he was met with, he quickly spoke again.

"But that's fine," He said swiftly, "I can still look after you, love. I'll be okay."

Shuichi thought for a moment, as if he was trying to process all of it. Chewing on his lower lip, he shook his head.

"Kichi can be small too," He said with a smile, "Be fun! We play together!"

Kokichi blinked at how little Shuichi seemed to mind. He thought that maybe he would be upset he was regressing too, that he would feel like Kokichi was breaking part of their deal.

"Y-You're sure?" Kokichi mumbled, the permission already causing his mind to get fuzzy.

Shuichi nodded excitedly.

"Uh huh! What you wanna play, Kichi?" He asked, scooting over to the few toys they had pulled out.

There were some scattered on the floor. There were other colorful blocks, as well as two plushies. But what really caught Kokichi's attention was the plastic piano, the keys labeled do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, all the way up to do again.

"Piano?" He offered softly, "We... play songs together?"

Shuichi giggled, grabbing the piano and placing it in front of them.

"Uh huh!" He said, "You first."

Kokichi reached out, pressing down on the mi key, going up to so. Shuichi hummed, listening and reaching out to play his own notes.

The two played bunches of notes and melodies. They (admittedly poorly) sang the scale together, laughing and making music. Kokichi, now regressed, couldn't believe he thought Shuichi would get mad at him. They were having so much fun together, the stress of today melting like snow under the sunlight.

However, before long, Kokichi felt a yawn escape his lips. Shuichi glanced over to him.

"Sleepy?" He questioned, and Kokichi nodded.

So, the two of them piled some blankets on top of each other, as well as some pillows before laying down. Each of them had their own stuffed animals, too.

And, sure, they could have gotten up and gone to their beds. But building a makeshift pillow fort was much better!

Sooner or later, though, they curled up onto the floor, snuggled into the blankets. The dimly lit TV played a children's show in the background, the background noise comfortably beginning to lull them to sleep.

"Nini, Kichi..." Shuichi said, his eyelids wavering closed.

"Nini," Kokichi murmured, "'M sorry got small when I was gonna take care of you."

"'S okay," Shuichi promised, "'S fun when we're both small!"

Kokichi felt a smile form on his face as he buried himself further into the pillow. Maybe things weren't so bad after all.

Drowsiness overtook him, and he ultimately drifted off to sleep, content next to Shuichi.
