"No way," Amaya said, "You took on criminals?"
"Yes and no. I froze one guy's hand, and caught this other girl's knife," I said.
"But you have an 'x' on your neck, right?"
"Yes. That part I'm still figuring out."
"Ooh, let me see."
"A virus mark?" A British voice said from behind us. A kid wearing a black turtleneck sweater and long black leggings said. He had long, dark black hair, styled to where it covered his left eye.
"Uh...we did not mean to disturb you, Lucifer-" Amaya said.
Everyone's head perked up at the mention of his name. Anyone in the hallway---that included Terri---booked it out of there, speeding into any room to get away from Lucifer.
"So, Lucifer, is it?" Strange name. I can't imagine any parent naming their child that. "You know what this is-"
"I shouldn't be talking to you," Lucifer said, walking off, lowering his head.
"Hey, wait! Wait!" I trailed after him, ignoring the stares that people gave me.
"So what's the deal here? Are you a jinx, or something?"
"No, I am the only dark one who goes here."
"Cool, that makes you unique."
"I don't think you realize that dark ones in this school are not a good thing. Now, as I was saying, move."
He walked off, but I had to get him back. If he knew what this marking was---a virus mark or whatever---that was my best chance.
"Do you happen to know someone with incredibly long fingers, a forked tongue, is really tall, and has bright yellow eyes."
Lucifer stopped dead. He, too had wings except these were black and feathery.
"He also is bound to make clicking sounds."
Lucifer sped towards me and slammed me against a wall, holding his hand on my mouth.
"Shut up," he growled.
"Get your hands off of me-"
"I know who you're talking about, but if you value your life and mine, we cannot let anybody know about him, are we clear?"
"We'll be clear once you let go!"
Lucifer let go and dusted himself off.
"When do we talk about it?" I asked.
"Outside, during lunch. I don't eat anything, I won't be a bother."
Lucifer then walked down the hallway, and as soon as he disappeared, everything bounced back to normal.
----------------------------------
That day, Lucifer and I stood on the far side of the field. Lucifer stood by the chain link fence. There was a tennis court on the other side. The girls Amaya was talking about yesterday were inside playing.
"First can I ask, how do you know him?"
"I don't want to disclose that. I just know him well enough."
"Okay then. What is he?"
"I thought we already established that. He's a virus."
"Virus?"
"Viruses are almost always parasitic dark ones. It's a new term, not sure you've heard of it. They're near-indestructible, have heightened senses, and are bound to be a part of gangs and other types of groups."
