"Ava's really good," Xan said.
"Yeah," I said.
"What ever is the matter? You seem gloomy."
"I'm not gloomy. It's just that...my parents don't know what I'm doing. Every time I say I'm going off to Celeste's house, they think it's because we're friends. They don't know that I'm risking my life."
"Maybe you should tell them."
"Yeah, right. They'll probably say something along the lines of: 'Terry, how dare you lie to us? We can know longer trust you to do anything by yourself.'"
"But how do you know that they're going to punish you?"
"What?"
"What if they'll reward you. Have you ever thought about it like that?"
"Well, no."
"What if I trained you? How's that?"
I smiled, "I'd like that." I stood up and went through the portal to Xan's world. He took me to the center of a large field.
"I'm going to help you channel your emotions. You may not realize it, but your emotions affect your power. Test your skills."
I shot a blast of ice near Xan. He deflected it, and it knocked me onto the ground.
"What was that for?"
"What were you feeling?"
"Duh, fear. You nearly killed me."
"Exactly. Fear. Your fear was holding you behind. Let's try that again, less fear this time."
I nodded and stood up. I shot another ice blast at Xan, he deflected it. I moved my hand towards the ground and the magic disappeared.
"See?" Xan said. "You'll be able to do more than just that."
"I want to do more than just that," I said.
Xan smiled. We spent the rest of the month practicing. I was growing stronger and much more powerful. I knew that, but at the same time, weird things were beginning to happen.
