"Did you get a weapon?" I asked Lucifer.
"I use magic," He said, holding out a darkening hand.
Everyone was playing around the yard and using their powers and new weapons. Testing them out.
"So, I've always wanted to ask you. Why does everyone fear you? You seem normal."
"I'm not normal, Terry. Dark ones are considered instruments of death. And if the name weren't foreboding enough, then it's what dark ones do to their victims that scares everyone."
"You haven't killed us."
"Well, I'm awfully tired of the whole 'dark ones have to kill everyone' rule."
"What does Celeste have against you?"
"Dark ones and light ones are always taught to hate each other. I haven't done anything to her, nor has she done anything to me that resulted in our hostility towards each other."
"What's it like at your place?"
"I have another sibling. Onyx. So I'm the middle child. Both Thrax and I were adopted. I'm not actually sure where Thrax came from, not even sure he had parents. I just know that I grew up with him."
"Does he hate you?"
"He hates everybody...but...we don't hate each other. We talk to each other a lot."
"Lucifer, why would you continue to go to school if you hate it there?"
"The way I'm treated at school...is more humane than the way I'm treated at home."
My eyes went wide.
"Are you abused?"
Lucifer looked around as if he were going to tell a secret. He pulled one of his sleeves and showed me a scar. It was long and jagged and pointed. There was a black line on the inside that was crooked and greyish marks on the outside. I gasped.
"I forgot to do my chores, and he made sure that I never forgot again."
"Does your mother treat you the same way"?
"Yes, she's less cruel...sometimes. I hardly see my father now, he's always in the basement up to something."
It was just now that I noticed that a long strand of hair fell around his eye. We sat down on the porch.
"You're not from around here, are you?"
"You're very observant, you know that?" Lucifer said, with a grin. He had sharp steak-knife teeth, but I didn't care. "And you're right by the way. I'm originally from Edinburgh, Scotland."
"You're from Scotland?" Bones said, speeding around us, "I thought you were from Britain."
"What? Is it the accent?"
He nodded.
"I've never been to Scotland. I'm from Spain."
"You're from...Spain?" I said.
"Yep! Good, ol' Spain. Ferd and I left because of the bull fights. Why'd you leave Scotland?"
"I went to Andalusia, caught up with an old...friend. And then traveled here."
Bones and I looked confused.
"I lost an eye in Scotland, okay?"
He moved the piece of hair out his face and showed us his eyepatch.
"So. Awesome," Bones said.
"Is it okay to ask how?" I said.
"I was...meddling in things that apparently, I shouldn't have."
"Did it hurt?"
Lucifer glared at Bones. "Of course it did. And the entire school was watching." Lucifer held up a long clawed finger. He then retracted the claws.
"What are we talking about here?" Celeste asked, drawing one of her crystal swords, "What happened to your eye?"
"Oh, shut up, Celeste," Lucifer said, rolling his...eye.
There was a large explosion down the street.
"Should we-?" Glamour said.
"Of course. We did this for a reason, you guys!" Amaya said. She grabbed her by the hand and led her down the street.
The same people were there. They gasped when they saw me.
"I don't know whether to count you as brave or foolish," the Evil Angel said.
"Who is she?" Amaya asked.
The Evil Angel shot an arrow from a crossbow at us.
"More importantly, what is she?" Bones asked.
The Evil Angel sighed, "Kill them." She disappeared and left Thrax and Nereid to take care of us.
"I expect an explanation when we get home, Thrax," Lucifer said.
"You don't need one," Thrax said, sliding his fingers down on the glass.
Nereid grinned. She threw knives towards us, and we started our first fight. Obviously, Lucifer started fighting Thrax. Nereid, for a child, was good.
"Shouldn't you be in school?" Nereid said.
"Shouldn't you?" I said, shooting blasts of ice towards her.
She shot knives towards us. Those appeared to be her only weapon. The fight between Thrax and Lucifer, however, was getting good.
"You're stupid to fight against us," Nereid said.
"Actually I think you're the stupid one."
"Oh, you think you're so smart. Knowledge gets you nowhere in life."
"Actually, I think you could use some."
Nereid lunged at me, but I didn't flinch. She waved her arms, but something was holding her back. Thrax was grabbing hold of her fight with his tendrils. He pulled her back.
"We got what we came here for. So why don't you shut up with the trash talk and let's go."
"You have no authority over me. Only my parents-."
"You're right. Your parents can't kill you. 'Cause they're dead." Then the two left, but he gave me a furious glare before leaving.
"Seems to me like the eight of us won't be able to defeat them alone," I said.
"What? So we're recruiting someone else?" Lucifer said.
"Well, yes."
"What about a human?" Amaya said.
"Human?!" Terri said, "All they know how to do is shoot guns and insult whatever isn't HUMAN!"
"Well, we can get one that isn't an adult."
"A child? We're going to teach a child to defeat monsters?" Lucifer said.
"No, something that's a child, but not an adult. Eh? Get what I'm saying?"
"No," We all said synonymously.
"Fine, let's all go home, sleep on it, and come back tomorrow. What do you say?"
"Sounds like a plan," Terri said.
Then the eight of us left.
