“Where are we going?” Jason asked with anger and worry clear in his deep voice.
“I’m going to drop you off at their school; you will search for them there while I will check somewhere else. If you find them text me, if I find them I’ll text you.” I said in a tight voice trying to retain my anger from seeping into my words as well as the excessive worry about them being with my father.
“But they already searched the school and they didn’t find them.” Jason said glaring at me with fire spitting eyes burning holes of anger on the side of my head as I drove.
“Well, they’re f*cking morons! Do you really trust them to find them? They could still be at school right under their f*cking noses and they wouldn’t know!” My voice ached from how I restrained from screaming at him.
He nodded in agreement and understanding, and turned to look out the window in thought.
He cleared his throat making me glance at him from the corner of my eye.
“I don’t have your number.” He said in a less angry tone of voice, but still angry none the less.
I groaned and took one hand away from the steering wheel and sat up a little, lifting myself slightly to pull my phone out of my back pocket. Without a word or a glance to him, I handed him my phone and hoped he knew what to do.
Luckily, he understood my unspoken demand of him putting his number on my phone, and handed it back to me when he was finished.
We were a few minutes away from the school. The school was just a couple of streets down after passing the railroad tracks. We were almost going to reach the tracks, when the railroad crossing gate went down indicating the train was about to pass.
I looked to my right to see how long of a train it would be and cursed under my breath. It was a hella long one!
Only one thing to do…
“Shit! What are we going to do know?” Jason asked looking in the trains direction as well.
I sped up.
“What are you doing?” Jason asked me looking straight at me wide eyed.
I ignored him and pressed down on the gas even more.
“Alex! You’re going to get us killed!” Jason screamed at me now trying to snap me out of my trance.
Well no f*cking luck, because right now, I’m on racing mode.
My opponent? The train.
Start line? The railroad tracks.
Finish line? Jaiden’s school.
No way in hell can anyone snap me out of my racing trance. When I race to the finish, I race to the f*cking finish! I don’t give a shit what happens to me in the process as long as I get to the damn finish!
I couldn’t hear a thing. Not Jason freaking out, about ready to shit his pants, not the train’s blaring horn, nor the buzzing sounds that suddenly filled my ears.
The railroad crossing gate was just about to lower down fully. I pressed even harder on the accelerator as my eyes narrowed on the gate. I passed it, but right as I got onto the railroad track, the train was less than a minute away from hitting me.
“Holy mother of f*ck!” Jason yelled shutting his eyes tightly.
The train whizzed past right behind my car. A second later and we would’ve been hit.
I looked to my right, still driving, to check on Jason. His eyes were still shut tightly and by the look on his face, I wouldn’t be surprised if he shitted himself.
I looked back to the road calming down my raging heart beat from the adrenaline that coursed through my blood at what just happed. The rush was as good as a race. It was practically a race, a race against a 120 to 240 tons train. You know, easy shit right there.
“Oh my f*cking god.” Jason finally breathed out. He stayed silent for a few minutes before he snapped. “What the hell was that?! You could’ve gotten us killed! Are you crazy?!” Jason bellowed at me, but I kept my face impassive.
That wasn’t that big of a deal. I mean ‘Deadly Mountain’ is way worse than that and so is illegal street racing, and I’ve done both already. The train was nothing.
“No.” I answered with no emotion still speeding through the streets.
I could feel his sharp stare burning through the side of my head. I ignored him not caring one bit. I still had to get to my finish line and I wasn’t easing up one bit.
“How did you do that?” He asked with curiosity written all over his words.
I didn’t answer, my mind focusing solemnly on getting to Jaiden’s school. I guess he took my lack of response as an invitation to continue.
“You drove like a professional would. An everyday person would have become part of the front of that train, but you passed it effortlessly and unemotionally. It was like you knew what you were doing.” He said completely baffled.
Again, I didn’t answer. What was I supposed to say? Oh, yeah I’m a street racer and a NASCAR racer. Hell yeah I would know how to maneuver a car with no problem at all… Yeah, not likely to happen.
“Are you gonna answer me?” He asked now getting irritated with me.
“We’re here.” I finally spoke swerving expertly to park beside the school.
The moved jerked him to hit his shoulder against the door.
“Alex…” He started after mumbling obscenities under his breath.
“Get out.” I stated not looking at him.
“Alex, please…” He tried again, but I shook my head finally looking at him.
“Jason! I need to find my sister! I need to know she’s ok! So get your ass out of my damn car and help me find our siblings!” I yelled at him with tears and anger rimming my eyes.
The look in his eyes told me he wanted to question me, but thought better of it. With a determined look in his eyes he gave me a firm nod and opened the door stepping out of my car. As soon as the door closed I revved the engine of my car and sped away from the school to my house.
To say I was terrified that my father had actually gotten to both Jaiden and Andy was the understatement of the century.
I’m not being paranoid either. He had actually come to that exact elementary school, years ago when I was in Jaiden’s grade, for me.
He had come to the school half drunk, but since he had a pretty high tolerance for alcohol, he was able to act sober long enough to fool the ladies in the office and take me out of school early. He grabbed my upper arm digging his yellowish nails fiercely into my skin, almost tearing the flesh. He shoved me in the back of the car and drove to the house recklessly since he was drunk… We had almost hit another car. He literally had pushed me out of the car once we had gotten home making me land on my knees. The concrete scrapped my knees drawing blood and tiny rocks dug into the cuts. I had tried so hard to keep my tears at bay, but I was nine, I didn’t have as much will power as I do now. Tears fell down my face at rapids speeds. My sobs resonated through my body. He yanked my hair making me stumble up to my feet and dragged me into the house. He slammed the door behind him and threw me on the floor. He began beating. And I couldn’t do anything about it. I had no one to protect me since my mom was at work. I didn’t have the safety of school and at the age of nine all I wanted to do at that moment was die…
I reached my house. I stopped the car not turning the engine off so I could make a quick escape. I jogged quickly to the front door and heard a screams and whimpers. I searched my pockets frantically for my keys and couldn’t find them. I was desperate to go in so I did the only thing left to do. I kicked the door open. And at the sight before, all I felt was complete regret at opening the door.
