“…When do you have to be home?” I asked him breaking the deadly silence in the car.
He only shrugged.
I sighed. “Ok here’s the thing. My friend is a racer here. I need to go help him out with a few things. So you will sit and watch the race. I will buy you food. You don’t move from the spot I leave you at until I come get you. Then I will drive you home ok?” I asked him.
He nodded, but said nothing.
I sighed once again and opened the door to get out. He got out as well and we made our way to through the crowd to buy a ticket – to my own race – and went to buy him food before we went to find our seats.
Once we found our seats, he sat down, and I handed him the food.
“I will be back at the end of the race. Don’t move!” I emphasized.
I turned to leave before I felt a small yet strangely strong and rough – for an 11 year old at least – hand stop me.
“Why are you doing this for me? You don’t know me.” He said sounding completely confused.
“I’m not one to turn my back on ones who need help. Hell I need help so why not help others?”
He remained silent as his hand slowly fell limp at his side. I turned back around and shuffled my way through the crowd until I was at the parking lot. I hurried to my car and opened the back seat slipping my helmet on; making sure no one saw me. Then I ran as fast as I could to the garage where my car was and where Jerry was probably freaking out cuz I will be officially late in three minutes.
“I’m here!” I screamed between pants as soon as I got to the garage.
I doubled over, hands on my knees trying to catch my breath which didn’t seem to be finding its way into my lungs.
“Thank god!” Jerry mumbled as soon as he saw me taking a deep breath of relief. “Where the f*ck have you been?! You almost didn’t make it to the race! Damn it Reed! You can’t keep scaring the shit out of me like that! Do you know how important this race is?! Because you don’t seem to show it!” Jerry lectured me.
I grinned and stood up straight. Jerry gave me a ‘what the f*ck is wrong with you’ look seeing my grinning face after he just blew up on me.
“Jerry, relax. I got this. I would never miss a race. They are all important to me. I will win this shit, if not, trust me when I tell you I will not stop until I cross that f*cking finish line because that’s just the way I am.” I replied calmly still grinning of happiness.
I’m going to race!
Jerry said nothing more and tossed me the keys to my prized possession. I curled my fingers around the keys and fist bumped the air.
Time to race bitches!
I ran to the driver’s side of my car and hopped in. I strapped myself up and turned the thundering engine on making a huge smirk crawl up to my face.
