DEREK SIGHED WHEN HE ENTERED INTO HIS WAY TOO QUIET LOFT. he'd be lying if he said he didn't feel somewhat hurt when seeing the vacant couch that was always accompanied by his girl who waited for his arrival home. she made a habit to always wait for him to come home at night when he went out helping scott and his pack. but lately she hasn't been waiting up for him like she usually does. although he knew she was stressing over her college work, it still bothered him that she wasn't waiting for him.

he was well aware of how she becomes when she gets to wrapped up in her school work. she ends up isolating herself and putting her work before herself. there had been a few occasions where derek had to force her to take a break so she could get some food into her system. despite her putting up a good fight against him, he managed to win and get her to take a break.

now that derek was finally taking time from the pack and only helping when necessary, he was in such need of spending time with his girl. except her main focus was getting her work done and studying for her upcoming exams. derek was extremely proud of how hard she works. the only thing he's been craving is her full blown attention.

he walked into the bedroom the two shared, seeing her sitting in the middle of the bed typing away on her laptop. papers were scattered around her as she switched her gaze from her screen to the papers every few moments. it was easy to see how stressed she was.

with a pout on his face, derek made his way over to the bed and carefully sat down in a spot where no papers were laying. "baby, you're over working yourself again." he murmured with a frown, pushing her hair behind her ear to get a better look at her face.

"i just need to get this done. exams are coming up and i can't risk failing." she breathed out, continuing to type away on her laptop as derek rubbed her back up and down soothingly. "if i want to become a lawyer, i need to give everything my all and not let anything take away from that."

he frowned, "and that's okay, but you also need to take care of yourself and give yourself a needed break."

"i can't." she mumbled stubbornly, never tearing her gaze from her screen.

"baby, all i want is to spend some time with you and having a relaxed night. i miss you." he told her, hoping his words would get to her but they didn't.

"derek, i love you and want to spend time with you as well, but i really need to focus on my school work right now." she said, finally looking away from her computer to look at him. she'd be lying if she said the look on his face didn't hurt her.

"do you even care about this relationship anymore?" he asked her, his blunt question taking her by such surprise. "like all you do is worry about your school work, it's like i'm not even here anymore!"

"are you seriously doing this right now? the fact you would even think i don't care about this relationship anymore hurts!" she snapped, slamming her laptop shut and gathering her papers.

derek scoffed, "whenever i wanna spend time with you, you're always too busy with studying! all i'm asking for is for you to give me the same effort into this relationship as i put in."

"i don't want to have this argument with you. i've told you multiple times that becoming a lawyer has been my dream and nothing would change that. when we first got together, you were so supportive of me and pushed me to make it happen. so why are you doing this now?!" she snapped, turning to look at him with an angry look to which he couldn't help but find utterly adorable.

"i just didn't think it would get to the point where i felt neglected." he mumbled quietly.

she winced at his words, guilt warming inside her making her overwhelmed. she had no idea he felt this way or even intended to make him feel this way. and she deeply hated herself for that.

"derek, i'm so sorry." she whispered, looking down at her lap as she couldn't bear to look at him. "i never wanted to make you feel that way." she let out a shaky breath, trying to hold back the tears threatening to spill from her eyes. "please don't hate me."

"baby c'mere." he gently demanded, arms wrapping around her petite frame and pulling her into his chest.

instantly she relaxed within his hold, feeling the comfort she hasn't realized she'd been lacking for weeks on end. she never meant to make derek feel neglected in any way. all she wanted was to get through her schoolwork so she didn't have to worry about it anymore. that way she could focus on derek.

"i don't hate you. i could never hate you. i'm so incredibly proud of how hard you work and for chasing your dream. i know you didn't mean to make me feel neglected. i just wish you would give yourself a needed break and spend just some time with me." he explained in a soft tone, not wanting her to feel any more guilty or to blame herself more.

she wiped her eyes, looking at derek with a sorrowful look. "can you please take away my papers and computer?"

"of course, love." he murmured then planting a lingering kiss to her temple. he forced himself to part from her to gather her work and computer. he walked over to where her bag laid on the floor and shoved the work inside.

he turned around to see her curled up underneath the covers. he chuckled when she shot him an expecting gaze. he wasted no time in climbing in the bed, pulling her flush against him and inhaling her sweet scent. the wolf inside him growled contently, pleased to finally have its mate curled up into his chest.

"i love you so much." he whispered to her, littering soft kisses along her temple. "more than you can ever imagine."

"i love you too, derek. always."
