NUMB WAS THE ONLY THING YOU FELT EVER SINCE COMING BACK FROM THE ARENA. your body and mind were plagued with endless nightmares almost every single night. you could still smell the blood from the tributes lives you took, you could still hear piercing screams ringing in your ears, especially the sound of the cannons going off every time a tribute died. even though you were the victor, you still weren't a winner. of course you had preparation and training in the two weeks after you were reaped before heading inside the arena. your mentor, finnick odair, did everything he could to prepare you. though no one can ever prepare someone for what it's like after winning the games.
you didn't have anyone important to you. your parents were 'accidentally' killed by peacekeepers. you were an only child so you had no other family left after your parents died. luckily one of the victor's took you in and raised you as if you were their own. her name was mags and she was an older lady who won years ago. she would've helped finnick mentor you but because of permanently losing her voice, she was unable to help as much.
you also had your best friend, derek hale. the two of you have been best friends since the two of you were eight years old. you had bumped into each other on one of the dock's at the beach in your district. he made a snarky comment about your pigtails so you pushed him off the dock and into the ocean water. since then, you guys had been inseparable ever since. though you were never aware of such feelings derek always had for you.
his family knew how much he loved you and cared for you. hell, absolutely anyone who didn't know you guys could see the love in his eyes whenever he was with you. he always went out of his way to protect you and take care of you. every year when it was the time of the hunger games, he prayed and prayed your name wouldn't be drawn. the years your name was never picked, he was incredibly relieved and thankful.
until the year of the 67th hunger games and your name was called. you remember your entire body going cold and rigid from hearing your name. you were incredibly terrified, more so because you couldn't bear to say goodbye to derek and mags. the only two people in this horrible world you cared about and considered family.
