"Are you excited?" Amethyst asks Meagan as they sit in the waiting room. It's Meagan's last ultrasound appointment before the baby is born. "Yeah I actually am, but still a little nervous," Meagan replies.
"It's the last one before she's here!" Amethyst says excitedly.
"Meagan Stanford? The nurse says waving for them to come back. Meagan and Amethyst stand up and follow the nurse back. Meagan excitedly sits on the exam table and gets her vitals taken. As wait for the ultrasound technician, Amethyst smiles to herself as she watches just how excited her girlfriend is. "What?!?" Meagan asks when she notices.
"Nothing, you're just cute that's all!" She replies.
Meagan's feet dangle off the end on the table like a happy child, Amethyst sneaks a couple of pictures for memory's sake.
The technician comes in and prepares Meagan for the ultrasound, "I'll never get used to the coldness of that damn gel!" She says.
"I'm sorry hun. We usually have a warm one but I can't seem to find it." The technician tells her.
"It's okay, at least it's almost over!" Meagan replies.
"Yeah, this is your last one before baby is here huh?" She asks.
"Yeah, I'm so excited," Meagan tells her.
"That's good, and how about you?" The nurse asks, turning to Amethyst.
"Oh, I'm so excited." She answers.
As the ultrasound takes place, Amethyst notices something's off, she can't quite place it but can tell while she looks at the nurse's face.
Meagan notices too, she gets more worried when Amethyst walks over and holds Meagan's hand. The silence is so loud and time seems to be dragging on. Meagan and Amethyst look at each other and then at the nurse, something's wrong, they can feel it.
"Alright, let me go have a word with the doctor and I'll be right back." She says.
Meagan looks at Amethyst with tears in her eyes, "Is something wrong?" She asks, her voice breaking.
"I don't know love, let's try not to worry okay?" Amethyst tells her. She helps Meagan sit up and they both sit together waiting for the doctor.
"Did you see a heartbeat?" Meagan asks.
"I don't know love," Amethyst tells her.
It felt like hours but in a matter of minutes, the nurse comes back with the doctor, when they see the box of tissues in her hand they know something is wrong.
"Can you lay back down for me?" The doctor asks. Meagan does as told, she can't bring herself to look at the screen or the doctor. She only looks at Amethyst and Amethyst only looks at Meagan.
"Well," the doctor begins to say as he turns to the girls, "I hate to be the one to say this but there's no heartbeat." He tells them.
The rest is a blur.
Meagan and Amethyst don't cry at first but as they explain what's going to happen next, everything comes crashing down on them.
"So she's going to have to wait three days until you can induce her?" Amethyst asks.
"Yes, unless she goes into labor on her own." The doctor replies before saying, "I'll give you two a moment, you're free to leave whenever. Once again, I'm so sorry." He tells them and slowly leaves the room.
Amethyst and Meagan hold each other and cry and when they decide to leave, Meagan can feel the stares.
The stares are sympathetic but still burn into her like a bullet. There aren't many people in the waiting room but the ones that are can tell Meagan and Amethyst have been crying and they know what must've happened. They sit down for a moment to blow their noses.
"I just want to go home." Meagan cries.
"I know baby, let's go," Amethyst tells her.
They stand up and start to walk out when Meagan stops again.
"I want my mom." She cries and holds onto Amethyst.
"I know love, I'm sorry. Do you think if we see her she'll speak to you?" Amethyst asks.
"No, she'll just say it's my fault for not being a good Christian. I want my mom but I want her to be a mom to me, not a dictator." Meagan says in basically a yell. The women around them look at the two again, everyone's hearts break for Meagan but no one knows what to say.
The two leave the hospital in shambles as their world just fell apart once more.
