I was now officially nine months pregnant. I felt like I was the size of a house or maybe a small mansion. Lately I've been worried about Ruby. She's been canceling a lot of interviews and meetings. I didn't want her to risk her career just because I was pregnant. I knew how hard she worked to get this far.I came out of the bathroom from one of my now frequent pee breaks to see her on the bed with her phone to her ear.
"Can they reschedule it for at least another month. My wife is giving birth in a few weeks." I heard her say into the phone. I sat down on the bed and picked up Chance, sitting her on my lap. She licked my hand and laid her head close to my belly.
I listened as Ruby continued to talk.
"Okay let me know what they say. Ok thanks." She then hung up and looked at her phone. I stared at her while rubbing the side of my belly as they started kicking again."Is everything okay?" I asked her wincing as another sharp kick was aimed at my side.
"Yeah everything's great. Are you okay though?" She asked looking at me worried.
"Yeah they're kicking again. It's like they're playing soccer in there." I joked. She crawled to my side and laid her hand where I was rubbing. On cue another kick sounded.
"Ow." I replied and sighed. Ruby leaned down kissed my belly where they kicked at. Ever since the baby shower, she had taken to kissing my belly everyday. She called it her way of giving them kisses until they get here. Which I thought was the cutest thing in the world.
"Easy there little ones." She mumbled to my belly after she kissed it. That was another thing she started doing was talking to them like they could hear and understand her. Maybe they could. I read that they can hear outside the womb. They sometimes seemed like they do understand. Like now the kicking has stopped after she said that.
"Not even born yet and they're taken by you. It's either that or you're a baby whisperer." I say shaking my head and she laughed.
"No I don't think so love." She replied and I laughed again. We stared at each other silently for a few minutes.
"What are you thinking about?"she asked me softly."You." I just said.
"What about me?" She asked.
"I'm....worried about you." I said quietly and she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.
"Why are you worried about me?"
"Your call seemed important. You seemed to be canceling a lot of work stuff. If you need to work I'll be fine." I say and she shook her head while I spoke.
"Those are things that can be rescheduled. Missing the birth of my kids isn't." She argued.
"It's not like I'm giving birth tomorrow Ruby."
"You don't know that. Babies are rarely born on their due dates. You can give birth sooner or later and I rather be here than risk it." She said and I sighed. She was so stubborn like me sometimes. How do I convince her not to change her whole career for this. I've already put mine on hold. I'm not saying I'm giving up on singing but I'm about to be a mother to someone. I'm going to put their needs first and when their old enough to have some independence then I can try again. But for Ruby ,I want her to be able to do what she loves without worrying or having to risk anything.
"Okay if that's what you want to do then fine. All I ask is that you think about it next time. What if it's your only chance and you passed it up for a maybe." I say to her, touching her cheek with my hand. She stared at me silently for a while before she pursed her lips together and nodded.
