Imagine: You're sick of living in a world separated by factions, so you run away from home. Your boyfriend, Eric, finally finds you after years of searching, only to find that you're engaged to another.
*************************************
I can't do this anymore, you think to yourself, I'm sorry Eric...
You were tired of this lifestyle, you hated being constrained by factions, you hated not being able to see your family and old friends because of the faction rules, and you hated being a Divergent in a world like this. The only thing keeping you sane was your boyfriend, Eric, but at this point, that wasn't even enough anymore. You decided there was only one thing left to do; you had to leave.
You manage to sneak past the guards, and outside the fence. You walk for hours until the sun finally comes up. Eric must have seen my note by now, I hope he doesn't try to come after me...
Eric's POV
I roll over groggily, to cuddle next to Y/N; the bed is cold this morning. I feel around for a moment and the bed is empty next to me. Normally, I'd just assume Y/N got up to go to the bathroom, but for some reason, today just doesn't feel right. I shoot up and look around, "Y/N?"
"Y/N?" I call walking towards the bathroom, the nervous feeling in my stomach grows. The door is open and the lights are off. After searching the house, I try calling her, and it turns out that she left her phone here as well. As I pick her phone off the counter, I see a note under it. I recognize Y/N's handwriting as soon as I unfold the paper:
Eric, I'm sorry. I can't do this anymore, I can't live this life anymore, so I'm leaving. I'm alright and you don't have to come looking for me. By the time you read this, I'll already be far gone. I love you and once again, I'm sorry. ~Y/N
Years have gone by since Y/N left. I'm still searching, but I've had absolutely zero luck. She disappeared without a trace.
Y/N's POV A month after running away, you had found yourself in a new city, with no more factions, no more restrictions, and most importantly no more fear. You had moved into a small apartment in downtown, and you had started taking courses in the college nearby. you missed Eric with all your heart, but you finally felt happy.
Years had gone by and now you were working in a daycare, you were living a normal life, and you were even engaged to an amazing man. There was still a hole in your heart where Eric belonged, but you had learned to live with it. You and your fiancé, Sam, were sitting at a local cafe -taking a break from wedding planning- when you noticed a man standing across the road, staring at you. Eric?!
Oh my God, how the hell is this possible, "Y/N, sweetheart? Are you alright?"
"Huh...? Yeah, I'm fine Sammy," You mutter, "I think I just saw an old friend. I'll be right back!"
"Y/N wa-" You run off before Sam could finish.
You approach Eric and he instantly pulls you into a hug, "Y/N! I've been looking for you for years! What were you thinking?! Why did you leave?! You could have told me! We could have left together! Do you even understand what I've been going through all these years?!"
"Eric! Slow down!" You interrupt his frenzy, "How did you find me?"
"Like I said, I've been searching for years."
"Maybe we should sit and talk," You suggest. You phone suddenly buzzes:
Sam: Y/N, I just got an emergency call from work, I gotta go, but I'll see you tonight! Love you.
"Looks like we can do that now actually," You say. You lead Eric back to the cafe and you two discuss everything you'd been through over the past few years, and Eric looks absolutely devastated after you tell him about Sam.
Eric's POV
It's been a week since my conversation with Y/N, I've been staying a cheap motel for the past few days, drinking away my pain. I finally come up with a decision. I'm getting Y/N back.
I drive to the daycare she works at. It's late at night and she should be getting off work soon, she always stays late to clean up. I see her walking down the side walk, "Y/N?"
"Eric?! What are you doing here?" She asks, walking over to my car.
"Just driving around, get in, I'll give you a ride home."
"Oh, it's okay! I'm fine walking!"
"Oh come on Y/N," I chuckle. She shrugs and gets in the passenger seat. I drive back towards the motel.
"Um, Eric...this isn't the way back to my apartment," She finally says.
"I know," I breathe, locking the doors.
"Eric," Her voice shakes slightly, something that always happened when she was nervous, "Where are you taking me?!"
"Shh, relax Y/N, I'm not gonna hurt you."
I eventually lead her out of the car and into my motel room.
She paces back and forth frantically, "Eric, please, I just want to go home. Sam is waiting for me!"
"Sam, Sam, Sam," I mutter, "He's all you ever fucking talk about!"
She flinches at the sound of my voice, and I calm myself down, "But don't worry, I already took care of Sam."
I show Y/N her phone, she seems confused to how I got it, but her eyes fill with even more fear when she sees the text:
Y/N: Hey Sammy, I'll be a bit late. Love you!
"See, now he won't worry about finding you," I say casually.
"Eric," She pauses, taking a deep breath, "You're fucking crazy!"
She bursts into tears and I drop down on to my bed, running my hands through my hair, "Y/N, Y/N please stop crying."
"Look, I brought you here so I could get you out of this place," I explain. She looks at me as if I'm crazy, "Y/N, we can go back to having the life we had!"
"That's the problem Eric, I don't want that life, that's why I left," She says exasperatedly.
"Well we don't have to go to Dauntless if you don't want to, we could live here, we can be happy again!"
"Don't you see Eric, I am happy. I'm finally living the life I wanted. Sam and I are about to get married, we're already having a house built, we even have the names of our future children planned out! I'm sorry Eric, but I love him."
My heart breaks at her words and I realize what I had done, I had hurt Y/N, just for the sake of my happiness, "Go."
"What?" She breathes, "Really Eric?"
"Go. Just go Y/N. Go be happy," I whisper.
She quickly rushes towards the door, but then stops, my heart skips a beat, she's going to stay! She walks back towards me and presses her lips to mine, "I'll always have a place for you in my heart Eric, but this is my life now. Take care of yourself."
She walks out the door, leaving me in the quiet room with nothing more than the sound of my heavy breathing. I pick up the bottle of beer and put it to my lips.
