"Alright, we don't know much about this new powers you have, but I ask some of the priestess in the library and this are the books they came out with" Rhysand passed her a pile of books. She mostly eats alone at breakfast but today Rhysand had accompanied her.
"Ancient magic, the monsters of old Phrythian, the Mother and her gifts..." she read the titles out loud. "They sound rather old"
"They are old, because your powers apparently are old magic, from the very beginnings"
"Did you already read the books?"
"I have" he answered shortly. "That's not the matter, though, in those books there is everything you'll need, and when you are done come to me and we'll practice"
"Can we even practice with my powers? I mean you say they are ancient and well-"
"I am more than five hundred years old, Princess, I think I can practice with you when you are done" he grinned at her and she stood up with the books on her arms.
"Your ego is way too high, Rhysand, I'll help lower it when we start practicing"
"We'll see about that, Kallista" he said as she left the room.
The castle in which she was staying was beautiful and big, big enough she hadn't had stopped exploring it. There were a lot of rooms, hallways, balconies, drawing rooms; she has encountered some secret passageways even.
She was walking through one of the new hallways with the first book on top of the pile already opened in the first pages while her eyes followed the words.
Something shiny hit her eyes maki g her flinch at the sudden brightness. Kallista tried to find what had cause this when her eyes found a mirror that was reflecting the sun. Chills went down her spine and she froze on her step.
She couldn't completely see herself only her arm and some of the books were reflecting in the mirror, her breath stuttered but she couldn't move, she wanted to, she wanted to run away but her feet would not move.
Kallusta felt her hands start to tremble back her lit up in electric blue but then turn back as if it was recurrent lightning behind her eyes.
The princess was about to go under until a hand on her shoulder stopped her. She jumped and gasped at the sudden contact dropping the books to her feet creating quite a noisy chaos.
She turned and when she saw the warm hazel eyes of Azriel, his eyes were worried as they looked into her and she immediately looked away and knelt on the floor to pick up the books.
"Kallista..." he muttered her name but she ignored him continuing to stack the books. She felt him kneel besides her and his hands caught hers stopping her from picking the booms up. "Stop"
"I'm sorry"
"There's nothing to be sorry for, it's alright"
"No, it's not alright, how am I supposed to protect the entire realm if I cannot even look myself in the mirror?" She sighed mad at herself for her stupidity.
"Everyone is afraid of something, and it's not stupid, I think Cassian is afraid of spiders, would you believe it?" He grinned at her and she smiled at him. "Come, let's take some other way to your room"
He picked up the already stacked books with one hand and the other kept his grip on her hand.
She didn't object to it though.
The next morning she was walking through the halls with Rhysand as he explained something about the books she was supposed to read, she had read half of the first one already but not as fast as Rhysand expected her to be.
Kallista was so immersed in the talk that she didn't notice they were walking in the same hallway she did the day before. However, when she did notice she almost stopped but it was different from yesterday there was no sun reflecting on her.
She gather her bravery and looked to the side to find the mirror covered in a white sheet. They kept walking but Kallista kept her eyes in the covered mirror.
"the mirror, someone ordered to cover it up yesterday afternoon, it was such a weird request but I guess why not?" He shrugged with a smile. He was very aware of who had requested it and why, he was proud of his brother this time around, he was trying to do good by her, and it filled his hopeless romantic soul.
"Oh" Kallista muttered she was sure who had ordered the mirror to be covered but why would he do it?

She was dreaming.
It has been decades seen she had last had one of this dreams. The ones that showed her her cursed future, ones that she had started to fear.
Kallista was standing on an open field, battle was happening around her, the smell of blood and chaos filled the air like she had never seen before.
Blood also covered her face and hands, she looked down at herself and saw an open wound on her side that had passed even through the thick leathers she wore.
And then she looked up, calling to her, a cauldron., it was exuding magic, so much you could taste the metallic taste on her tongue.
It seemed that her body moved at it's own will when her legs started moving towards it. Everything seemed to go blurry for a moment and then she was in front of it, her hand in the air, about to touch it...
And then she woke up.
With a gasp her eyes opened only to be met by golden ones above her, in an impulse she threw him into his back on the bed, took the knife under her pillow out, and put it against his neck when she got on top of him.
"What are you doing here?" She asked him, the magic still swirling in her eyes like blue burning embers.
"You were screaming and fog was coming out of your room, I thought something had happened to you" he said calmly as to not startle her into plunging the knife into his neck.
"Why do you care if something happens to me? Matter of fact, why are you doing this?"
"Doing what?" He asked and felt the knife sink a tiny bit.
"Don't play dumb, you know exactly what I'm talking about"
"I thought I left my intentions quite clear that day, I'm not letting you go" his hands went to her thigh's and her hand trembled giving him enough time to take the knife out of her hand and throw it to the other side of the room, but he didn't change their positions instead grabbed a pale strand of her hair without taking his other hand off her thigh. "But I haven't asked you what you want, what do you want?"
His hand caressed her cheek the same way he had seduced her fifty years ago, but she was no longer a unknowing little girl, she was a woman that had gone through years of traumas, and she knew what the consequences were if she went forward with this.
"A distraction, just for tonight"
"Just for tonight" he nodded with something unknown swimming behind his eyes. "Then you can go back to hating me all you want"
And finally after decades of heartache their lips met once more.
