Theodora laid on the couch, flinging a ball into the air and catching it again. She always thought that she wasn't addicted to her phone but being stuck in this 80s town without it was driving her insane.
She heard the door open and Brett humming, so she lifted her head, thankful it wasn't her sister who would whisk her away with some other job to do.
"Heya Theo." Brett said happily, shutting the door behind him.
"Hey Brett." She said. "I'm bored. Why can't we just find Myc tomorrow? I'm sure he'll stay out of trouble."
"I agree, we can find Myc tomorrow. I feel like today we should just focus on really immersing ourselves in 80s culture." Brett replied, leaning against the couch.
"Reagan won't be too happy about that, she wants to be in and out of here as quick as we can." Theodora murmured. "Man, you really love the 80s, huh?"
"Yeah." Brett looked sheepish, "I like it here, it's more exciting than our life in the 2020s."
"Hmm." Theodora tilted her head back so it hung over the arm of the couch.
"Hey, how about we do something, just the two of us. There's a roller skating rink in town we can check out." Brett sensed her boredom and decided to take advantage of it.
"That could be fun. I've never been roller skating." Theodora admitted, leaning down to put on her shoes. She ignored Brett's attempt to use the roles he assigned them. Brett let out a theatrical gasp,
"Then I must teach you!"
"If you insist." She laughed, following him out the door. It was a warm day, and the sun beat down on them as they walked. Theodora shrugged off her denim jacket and tied it around her waist, leaving her in a tank top.
Brett stole a glance at her tan skin as it glistened in the sunlight but tore his eyes away quickly. The town was small, so they reached the roller skating rink pretty quickly. It wasn't much cooler inside than it was outside, there was obviously no air conditioning.
Through the speakers played scratchy music as Brett and Theo walked up to the desk to hire roller skates. Pulling on the sweaty, reused socks, Theodora scrunched up her nose at the roller skates, which were old and like the socks, dirty.
"Can you do these up for me?" Theo flashed a smile at Brett, waving her feet at him. "Pretty please?"
"Sure." He dropped to his knee and did the laces up on her roller skates.
"Wow, guys in the 80s are much better gentlemen than in the 2020s." Theodora exclaimed, one hand on her heart as she pretended to gush.
"Heh." Brett let out a small chuckle, before extending a hand to her to help her stand up. She noticed a slight blush on his cheeks but decided it was because of the heat.
As Theodora stood, the skates slipped from beneath her but luckily Brett managed to catch her by grabbing her waist. "Woah!" She breathed, her heart racing.
"You'll get the hang of it." Brett said reassuringly, "But for now, maybe it's best if you hold onto me."
"Thank you." Theodora clutched Brett's hand like there was no tomorrow as they made their way to the rink.
They did a couple of laps slowly so she could practise skating, until she could finally move without gripping onto Brett for dear life.
As he watched her skate away excitedly once she got the hang of it, he couldn't help but miss the feeling of her hand intertwined with his and wished that she wasn't such a fast learner so he could help her for longer.
"Hey, you're a natural!" Brett called out to her as she twirled around proudly.
"Better keep up, handjob!" Theo called, almost toppling over but finding her balance again. Brett smiled at her confidence, her happiness was contagious.
Everything She Wants by Wham! began to play on the speakers as Brett caught up to her. Theodora grabbed his hand, not because she was going to fall or anything, but because she wanted to.
Brett's cheeks hurt from smiling at her small giggles and exclamations when either of them nearly fell or bumped into someone else.
"God, I love this song!" She turned her face to the roof, closing her eyes as she embraced the sound. "80s music is the best music."
"Right?" Brett said excitedly. "It makes me feel at home."
"Me too. I feel at home right now." Theodora opened her eyes and glanced sideways at Brett who was watching her. His goofy smile and messy hair made her stomach twist for some reason and she didn't know why.
"So do I." Brett said quietly, Theo almost didn't catch it. Both out of breath, they slowed to a halt as the song ended.
"Now, to all the couples on the rink this afternoon, some love songs to set the mood." A voice over the speakers boomed.
Brett let out a nervous giggle and Theodora avoided his eye. Even though they were pretending to be a couple they both couldn't put themselves through that awkwardness.
"Uh, I'm thirsty, should we get a drink?" She asked quickly, as Head Over Heels started to blast on the speakers.
"Yeah." Brett nodded enthusiastically, he didn't know what he would do if they stayed on the rink with the other couples.
They grabbed a soft drink each, and then sat at a booth by the skating rink. Both tried to ignore the sensual music that played in the background. Theo grasped at her straw, she sensed awkwardness in the air all of a sudden.
"Hey, I really like your hair like this." Theodora leaned over the table to scruff his hair lightly. "I don't remember if I already said that."
"You didn't." Is all Brett could get out, his voice getting caught in his throat. "Y-your hair looks good, too. I mean it always does, but-"
"Thanks, I take great pride in my hair." Theodora twirled a strand in her fingers. Why were their interactions suddenly awkward? She looked over at Brett, who's eyebrows were furrowed together as if he was thinking hard about something.
This was the kind of awkwardness that could only be felt on a first date with someone. Brett did assign her as his girlfriend in his narrative but even if it was a pretend date why did it feel like a real one?
"Brett," Theodora broke the silence, "is this a date?"
"Well yeah, you're my girlfriend." Brett said matter-of-factly with a small chuckle.
Theodora rolled her eyes, amused, "No, in real life, silly."
"In real life?" Brett laughed nervously, "No, no. You have a boyfriend." The reminder made him somewhat annoyed.
"Alright." She smiled with a shrug, she wasn't convinced but decided to drop the matter.
"Unless you want it to be." Brett added quickly, glancing at her.
"Brett, relax." Theodora laughed, "I love spending time with you, it doesn't matter if it's a date or not. I was just teasing."
"Just teasing, right." Brett repeated her words. It definitely felt like she was friendzoning him. But what was with all the hand holding? Maybe he was just confusing himself even further.
They sat in silence again, as they watched the couples on the roller skating rink.
"We should get back before Reagan goes mad." Brett said, "She's probably wondering where we are."
"Sure."
