Then, they went home and Reagan and Theodora got ready for her party. It wasn't anything big, they were just going to their favourite bar and then maybe hitting a couple of clubs.
Since they went to McUltra's way too much, they were at a different bar.
Everyone was drunk and happy, but Theodora sat on a stool and watched the door. Brett wasn't here yet and she was beginning to get nervous, he wouldn't ditch her, right?
She was torn out of her trance when Jasper appeared next to her, leaning over the bar counter. But all she could think about was how mad she was that it was Jasper next to her and not Brett.
Fuck, what is wrong with me?
"Hey, what's on your mind?" Jasper asked.
"Uh, nothing." She spoke. Which was a lie. Brett was on her mind. He always was. Which made her feel guilty and confused.
"You're not having fun?" He asked sympathetically. God, why does he have to be so nice? I feel like such an asshole. Theodora frowned.
"Can you just leave me alone for a bit?" She snapped, without meaning to sound as rude as she did.
"Fine." He sighed and left her alone.
"Fuck..." Theodora murmured, she was too drunk to work out how she was feeling. She looked up to the bartender, "Can I get whatever your strongest drink is?" She said before chucking another glance at the door.
Three drinks in, Theodora was on the floor with Gigi and Andre dancing to some J-Lo. Her face was stony, she just couldn't find a way to enjoy herself.
Even when Andre slipped a small white pill into her hand, whispering 'happy birthday', she chucked it back without asking what it was.
"I'll be back." She said a little harshly, before leaving the crowd to get some air. Why wasn't Brett here? She thought over and over again, her eyes on the door again. He hates me. Fuck, he finds me annoying. He doesn't care about me but I can't stop thinking about him.
She didn't even notice that Jasper had appeared by her side, once again.
"Babe, are you okay?" He asked.
"Don't call me that." She felt sick to the stomach, falling into a seat, he sat next to her and grabbed her hand.
"What? Theo, you have to tell me what's wrong."
Meanwhile, Brett was arriving at the bar, about to push the door open. He caught a glimpse through the window and he smiled as he saw Theodora.
But she was sitting closely with Jasper, and he was holding her hand. It was just another cruel reminder that she was with Jasper and she'd never be with him. What am I even doing here? He felt so out of place and just downright jealous. He wished he was holding her hand and not Jasper.
Frowning, he turned around and left. He knew it was selfish but he didn't know if he could stand being around Jasper anymore, and seeing him with Theo.
Theodora shifted uncomfortably in her seat, "I'm breaking up with you." She said over the music, and Jasper dropped her hand abruptly.
"What? No, Theo, you're drunk. And... high?" He peered at her blown out pupils.
"I know what I'm doing. This is what I want." Theodora frowned slightly. "I'm sorry. It's not personal, you're a really great guy."
"Theo..." Jasper looked to be in pain, "But... I love you."
"I know!" Theodora snapped, before stopping herself, "Sorry. I was raised by egomaniacs."
Jasper sighed, looking at his hands. "I understand. You're in love with someone else, aren't you?"
"Huh?" Theodora's heart thumped against her chest.
"It's okay, I can tell. I've known for a while." He said sadly. Theodora felt a jolt of guilt through her body,
"I'm sorry, Jasper." She covered his hand with hers, "I wish we could have made it work, but I'm just... confused. And I know I was such a bitch to you, I'm sorry."
"It's alright." He offered a small smile, "We had our fun but it's run it's course. I wish you the best, Theo." He got up, and proceeded to leave the bar.
Theodora watched with wide eyes. Did I just do that? Fuck, fuck, fuck. The feelings I might have for Brett. This makes them real.
Tears sprung to her eyes but she blinked them away. Her head shot to the door as it opened, thinking it might be Brett. But it wasn't.
It was Rand.
"Dad?" Theodora leapt up from her seat, swaying slightly. "What are you doing here?"
He was also drunk, "It's a public bar. Anyone can be here."
Reagan also must have seen him come in, because she stormed up to them. "Get out of here." She hissed to Rand.
"No, it's Theo's birthday and I have to give a speech." He slurred his words and stumbled to the little stage.
"Oh no." Reagan grumbled, folding her arms as Rand fumbled with the microphone. He tapped it a couple of times, the manager approached him and they shared a couple of words.
The music died down and everyone turned their attention to the stage, "Excuse me everyone," The manager spoke into the microphone, "it seems that we have a birthday in the building tonight!"
A couple of people cheered but Theodora only frowned deeply. Rand pushed the manager out of the way,
"Speech! I have... a speech." He slurred, and both Reagan and Theodora mentally prepared for what was to come. "Theo... where are you?" He scanned the room for her, before finding her standing with her arms crossed.
"Yeah, Theo!" Someone from the crowd shouted.
"Theo..." Rand started, and it looked like he had not thought through his speech at all, "What to say about little Theodora..."
She was beyond embarrassed as Rand spoke, "Even though you were a mistake," He said, earning a couple of laughs from the crowd of people who didn't realise that he was being 100% serious.
"A genuine mistake. We sued the condom company." Rand chuckled, "Anyway, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for you."
"Really? Never would have been able to tell." Theodora said through gritted teeth to Reagan next to her.
"It's a shame you didn't inherit my brain, but at least you got my good looks and natural charm."
Theodora rolled her eyes.
"I know I wasn't there for you in your childhood but maybe that was a good thing," The audience went silent with shock and concern, "because despite being a little bit messed up in the head, you grew up to be an independent young woman that I'm... I'm... I guess 'proud of' would be the word."
Theodora and Reagan shared a confused look, did he just say that? A couple of 'awes' came from the crowd.
"Oh, and I'm sorry for giving you a boy's nickname." He finished before dropping the mic.
It wasn't much, but Theodora knew that in terms of Rand, this was a heartfelt speech. As Rand approached them, Reagan was ready to scold him but Theodora didn't look mad at all.
"Happy birthday kiddo." Rand placed a hand on Theodora's shoulder.
"Thanks, dad." She simply said.
"Wow, Theo, are you feeling okay?" Reagan frowned, "Since when are you so calm?"
"Could be the xanny." Andre appeared next to them.
"I've never felt better." She said simply, which was a lie. She couldn't think straight, she was confused beyond belief and she wished she could just forget all about Jasper and Brett and her dad and her entire dysfunctional life.
