With that, the pair stalked off. Theodora turned to Brett, her eyes gleaming. His hands were still around her waist even though Brad and Stacy weren't looking anymore. Neither of them noticed, or minded.
"Oh, my God!" Theodora exclaimed, "Was that hilarious or what?"
"Is this the real reason you wanted to come? To show off in front of Brad?" Brett raised an eyebrow.
"Come on, you saw Brad's face when you told him how successful you were!" Theodora laughed, "I think you'll be the best remembered as the best guy here after tonight!"
"But all of that was a lie. I'm not successful at all." Brett said nervously, lowering his tone.
"I lied about us being together." Theodora shrugged, which reminded Brett to drop his hands from her waist. This is as close as I'm gonna get, and it's a lie. "Doesn't make it wrong. And plus, you're successful in other ways, who cares about a dumb job?"
From where they stood, Brad and Stacy watched apprehensively. They weren't 100% sold on the narrative they had just heard.
Theodora caught their eye from across the room and caught sight of their unconvinced expressions. As they made eye contact, Brad and Stacy began to make their way back over, clearly wanting to come back for seconds.
"Oh no," Theodora muttered, before facing Brett, "quick, kiss me!"
"What?" Brett frowned, looking between her eyes. He wasn't sure that he'd heard her right, his heart thumping against his chest.
"Kiss me." Theodora repeated in a low tone, before pulling Brett in by the collar of his shirt. Their lips met harshly and Brett shut his eyes quickly as he realised he had them open in shock.
Theodora's hands wrapped around his neck and Brett's hand fell lightly onto her waist as he pulled her in closer. Her lips were soft against his and they both realised that this just felt right.
Theodora opened one eye and saw that Brad and Stacy were no longer intrigued in them, so she pulled away.
"That was close." Theodora breathed, both of their cheeks were flushed and Brett avoided her eye. Her stomach was filled with butterflies and she suddenly couldn't really make eye contact with him, either. "Hey, you played along well."
"Played along?" Brett was flushed, stumbling over his words as he tried to comprehend what just happened.
"Yeah, Brad and Stacy were coming over." Theodora said, glancing over at them.
"Oh, right." Brett suddenly felt ill, "I'm gonna throw up!" He beelined to the nearest bin, Theodora close behind him. As he puked inside it, she rubbed his back sympathetically.
"Was I that bad of a kisser?" She teased, as Brett stopped vomiting.
"I just don't like to lie." Brett emerged, wiping his mouth. She's the opposite of a bad kisser.
"I'm sorry." Theodora looked at her feet guiltily. "I guess I got carried away. I just didn't want Brad to think we were faking. I wanted him to think I was doing better off without him."
"So you aren't doing better without him?" Brett sat down in the nearest chair.
"I don't know." She shrugged, joining him. "But when I saw him with the girl he cheated on me with, I just panicked, you know?"
"I get it." Brett said softly, "And for what it's worth, I came here tonight hoping I could prove to my old classmates that I wasn't a loser too. Truth is... I was a joke at college."
"I didn't think you were a joke." Theodora said, meeting his eyes. "You were always my favourite of Brad's friends."
"No I wasn't." Brett didn't believe her, she was just trying to make him feel better.
"Yes, you were. I remember I always used to see you listening to records in the library, and you would sometimes dance because you thought no one was watching, but I would watch and I admired you because you had the courage to not care what anyone thought." Theodora smiled.
Brett sat in silence for a moment, before speaking. "You do remember me."
"Of course I do. I just never made the connection it was you. The same Brett as my kind and cheerful friend." Theodora spoke, "And hey, why didn't you tell me you knew me when you first recognised me?"
Brett looked at his hands, "I knew you wouldn't remember me, because you were like, the queen bee. And, we were only at school together for like a year and we never really spoke so I didn't expect you to remember me."
"You idiot," She laughed, "you should have told me sooner so we could have gotten this conversation out of the way." Brett laughed too, almost relieved.
"And hey, now I know why I feel like I've known you for ages." Theodora smiled, "It's because I have."
Brett looked up from his hands, did I hear that right? She felt like she's known me for ages. He reciprocated her smile, and something in his stomach twisted, he wished he could kiss her again.
"You know, this is like our third time pretending to be a couple." Theodora said, a sly smile on her face.
"Hey, you're right." Brett said nervously, he had no idea where this was heading.
"Maybe it's a sign." She said to herself quietly, he barely caught it.
"What? A sign of what?" Brett asked desperately.
"Let's get out of here." Theodora said suddenly, leaping to her feet, "Do you want to get some food?"
"Yes, of course I do!" Brett also got to his feet, "Where should we go?"
"Where do you want to go?" She studied his face. Brett paused, he was used to just going along with what other people wanted, and for once, he was being asked what he wanted to do.
"Can we go to Taco Bell?"
"Of course we can." Theodora grabbed his arm and pulled him out of the function, "I'm surprised, I didn't think white people could handle spice."
"It's cause I order everything mild."
