"Y/n," Rose said from Y/n's subconscious. "I told you to take a break."

"I did! ...For a couple weeks." Y/n shot back. "All I'm doing now is gem stuff, training with Pearl, and finishing up physics and my gym credits over this summer."

"When's the last time you've slept 8 hours or more?" Rose asked with confidence in her voice.

"...Sometime this month?" Y/n answered with uncertainty in their voice. "Anyway, that's normal for scholars."

"Y/n... you aren't getting it. Just... don't hurt yourself." Rose pleaded.

Y/n stood up from their desk and rubbed their eyes. They lazily walked to their window and saw that it was bright and early. Y/n hated studying with the blinds open as they saw the time slip away from them.

They opened their laptop and logged on to finish a school assessment. Y/n didn't like how rigorous the class was but aimed for perfection nonetheless.

A feeling of loathing resonated in Y/n, as per usual. They hated the work but also didn't want to disappoint their parents. Coincidentally, they promised Pearl they would train with her over the summer making Y/n's summer schedule even busier.

—----------------

They entered the Big Donut and recited in their head. "Hey Y/n." Lars scrolled his phone.

"Picking up for Ms. Maheswaran." Y/n repeated out loud perfectly.

"Black coffee and 2..." Lars struggled to remember the online order.

"2 spicy pretzels." Y/n corrected.

"That'll be $9." The boy said.

Y/n slid him two 5 dollar bills, picked up the drinks and pretzels, and left the store.

—-

They rode a light platform out of Beach City to get to the Maheswaran's place. Y/n quickly dissipated their light construct and carefully knocked on their door. Connie opened the door and smiled at Y/n.

"Here's the coffee, careful, it's hot... and then the pretzels." They said, handing her the foodstuffs.

—----------------

Y/n opened the doors to the post office and took in the abundant scent of paper. They looked and walked to the front counter to speak with a clerk.

"Hello, I'm picking up for Sadie Miller." They stated.

"...You don't look like a Sadie Miller." The worker replied

"Yeah, that's why I said 'I'm picking up' not that I 'was Sade Miller'." Y/n spoke with a tinge of impatience.

"..."

"Okay." The worker deadpanned and slid them 2 envelopes. Y/n put them in their hoodie pockets. They took no time in leaving to condense photons into light wings on their back and fly to Sadie's house.

—-

The night was cold and the flight back was frigid. Y/n felt like quitting with every fiber of their being but wanted to show perseverance.

They gently glided down to the ground and dissipated their wings. Y/n inhaled and knocked on her residence. There was no answer so the human decided to put the two letters in the screen door; Once again they were off.

—----------------

They shakingly inserted their keys into the door and went inside, nabbing a seat on the couch to warm up on. Y/n opened their phone to a couple missed messages from Steven.

Y/n felt chilly for some time and then a familiar voice. "Y/n... you're straining your powers, and you've probably caught a cold." Rose told in a serious manner.

"I'm fine..." Y/n thought

"You are lying to yourself... you don't even sound remotely believable." Rose shot back. "Besides, you already have fallen asleep."

"I what?!" Y/n looked around and noticed they were back in their mindspace.

"Allow yourself to rest." The voice started to fade... Y/n closed their eyes and let their thoughts drift away

(A/n: I wanted to get a chapter about Y/n's life outside of gem stuff and some of their relationship with Beach City.)
