Chill Tide

"Lapis!" Y/n exclaimed, being filled with shock. When the human looked down, they saw that they were standing on water.

A figure in the water turned around to respond to the voice, however, their hands were chained. "Lap...is?" Y/n repeated again.

"You!" An orange gem tried to crawl over to them but failed. Y/n was almost frozen in fear. "YOU'RE THE REASON I'M HERE! I'LL SHATTER YOU!" She crawled closer and closer to Y/n, actually managing to move.

"Why aren't my legs working...?" Y/n thought. They looked down and saw that their legs were starting to become chained into the water. "I'm... starting to feel like I'm becoming an... us..?"

"Y/n!" A voice reverberated throughout the water.

"Y/n!" Amethyst shook them awake.

"Huh? Oh yeah... searching for Malachite." They remembered.

"What happened? You were sinking into the water, very quickly, might I add!" Pearl explained.

"I dreamed of Lapis and Jasper. I think I was sinking there too" They said, looking around. "Why's Steven floating?"

"This is why we wear life jackets." Steven said after spitting out a fish. Garnet also emerged from the water while picking Steven out of it.

"Nothing."

"It feels like we've been searching for light years!" Pearl groaned.

"Light years measure light, not years." Amethyst corrected.

"Do you become a nerd when you're tired?" Y/n yawned.

"I'm sick of these life-diapers!" Pearl threw her hands up in exasperation.

"Safety is no punchline." Steven tiredly spoke.

"Safety is our job. We must find Jasper and Lapis. As it stands, their fusion is a ticking time bomb." Garnet explained, throwing a life-jacket that Steven offered her.

"She'll be okay.... Right?" Steven asked.

"She had control when she used her power to drag their fusion into the ocean. But, a fusion like theirs is unstable, bound together by anger and mistrust. If that bond snaps, their anger will take over, and destroy." Garnet further explained.

"Okay... let's play a... game. First one to fall asleep wi-" Y/n tried to say, falling asleep before ending their sentence.

"No fair..." Steven said, joining in on falling asleep.

Y/n was plopped on the sofa at the beach house.

"These two need rest, they aren't like us." Garnet said.

"You guys need rest too! You look exhausted." Steven said. They indeed looked exhausted, Garnet's face was wrinkling, Amethyst's face was scrunched up and drooling, and Pearl had disheveled hair.

"We look... awesome." Garnet lied.

"We should have a slumber party!" Y/n lazily exclaimed from the couch. Garnet put her hands on Pearl and Amethyst. "Steven's right. You should stay here and relax. But I'm going, because I'm always relaxed." She said.

"But Garnet, you couldn't possibly search the ocean by yourself, let me- uh, let us help you! We're a team!" Pearl retorted, clearly wanting to leave.

"Nooo way you're gonna.. gonna leave me out..!" Y/n spoke slowly.

"Right now you four are a party. A slumber party. Steven, put these three to bed. Don't stay up too late. There's snacks in the fridge. Bye." Garnet walked to the warp pad and warped away.

"Wait for... me.." Y/n snored.

Y/n opened their eyes and saw... water, again.

"Lapis! ..Jasper?" They looked around, begging for someone else to be there.

"What are you doing here?" Lapis turned around. The cyan-gem looked incredibly strained pulling water chains up from the ground.

"Okay, you tell me your location, I come and save you, boom, done." Y/n explained.

"No- you're distracting me. I HAVE to keep us trapped under the weight of the ocean."

The blue gem was soon pulled under the water; The one who took her place was Jasper. The human looked down at her fearfully. She finally realized that she couldn't reach Y/n, so they stopped struggling and instead opted to stare at them.

"Why do those rebels like you? Why do you like the Lazuli?" Jasper eventually asked, becoming more comfortable in her being taken prisoner.

"The... crystal gems? I love them, they love me... I fit in with them. It's any kid's dream to have superpowers and fight evil, I'm just living it." Y/n explained as they twiddle their thumbs.

"And why do you and the Lazuli... respect each other?" She asked.

"We've been through a lot together, I guess. You wouldn't understand, being a homeworld lackey and all." They chuckled.

"LACKEY?! I fought against Rose Quartz's army on the frontlines!" Jasper yelled.

"Like I said, disposable lackey." They were now laughing. Jasper got up and summoned her crash helmet; She looked infuriated. "Give me your best shot, lackey." The human mouthed.

Jasper was soon pulled under and replaced by Lapis, who was now using her water wings to keep afloat.

"Lapis! You have to tell me where you are, we'll come and save you, promise!" Y/n exclaimed as they got up and got closer to her.

"There's lots more Wafls at Beach City, Y'know." The human put her hand on Lapis' cheek, the two making eye-contact. "Even if we are killed or shattered by Homeworld, I'd like to spend my last moments with all of you gems."

She hesitated, looking up and then down at the water, and then back at Y/n. "Don't you see I'm trying to help you?" She asked.

"I'm Lapis Lazuli, and you can't keep me trapped here anymore. Does that sound familiar?" Y/n said.

"This is different." She stiffly replied.

"Just... let one hand go, and hold my hand. Then let the other one go, and hold my other one. You'll know where I am by heart if we can make contact." The human explained.

"I-" She looked up and down once more. "I don't need saving. We're Malachite now." Lapis' water wings covered her head, then she went under the water and was replaced by a tidal wave revealing Malachite. She yelled the word "Go" until Y/n woke up.

The human shot up and looked around. Someone was snoring.

"Garnet..?" Steven wasn't sure if Garnet was awake.

"I hate this gem stuff..." They said, closing their eyes once more.
