'It hurts.'
It all hurts. Pain was the only thing her brain registered. Her sensors going haywire at even the smallest speck of dust. She could see the sweat dripping down the Professors neck. Her vision becoming hyperaware of every pore on his face, counting every single strand of hair atop his head.
In the corner of the room, her sisters sat patiently. Waiting for her to get her shit together.
'Get it together, BC.'
She tried to close her eyes but that resulted in an even bigger headache. Out of every possible time for her to have a new malfunction problem, it had to be right now. And her eye of all places too. It wasn't like it was her hand that she could easily open up a panel and use a screwdriver to fix at the machinery. It wasn't as simple as a loose bolt or rusted washer. No exposed wires that she could replace quickly. No dust collecting in the ports behind her ear. No. It was the microchip implanted in her brain, the one that her right eye was attached to. The stupid sensors that were usually able to pick up heat signatures and zoom in on small pebbles at least a mile away, were going crazy.
This happened every now and then. Usually she'd of just waited it out. But the older she got, the more painful the headache were when it acted out.
It.
The stupid machinery that reminded her she wasn't really human. Sure she'd been told countless times she was still flesh and blood. She still had her organs and a beating heart. But was she really human if she was made to be a machine?
In order for the case of her glitch to be resolved, she'd opened up a panel located on the back of her neck, and hook up the Professors computer to herself. It would connect to her vision and memory chip, then she'd have to go in and reprogram her scanner system. But this was one of those times that she needed the Professors help. Her usual reboot and shut down wasn't proving to be effective. And the super-computer built into her brain wasn't responding either.
God, she hated when this happened. And right now? They were in the middle of enjoying dinner. It was a day that had started off normal. And that's saying something when you live in a house with three people who were genetically modified by the government and used as test subjects and war weapons. Rarely ever is there anything remotely normal about anything.
"Okay, Buttercup, see if that's done anything." The Professor, since taking the girls under his wing, had been a great help with their needs. He himself was a scientist—one who jumped at the opportunity to take in three young girls and raise them as if they were his own. Even with the knowledge of them being possible disasters.
Ticking timebombs.
"It still hurts." Buttercup attempted to shut her eyes, but now her thermal imaging decided to make itself known. "Ah shit! You turned on—"
"I can see that," The professors voice never raised. He was always calm and patient with the girls. Even if they got angry. He continued typing away at the keyboard.
Then in the blink of an eye, all pain she felt vanished. Her sensor stopped over-noticing everything. Heat signatures turned off. Everything appeared to be back to her original vision. A small box appeared around the professors face, it zoomed in on his smile before focusing on his eye. A screenshot captured his face before a small data box appeared on the left view of her vision. Date of birth, age, height, name, occupation, background knowledge. It all checked out. Everything was back to being stable.
Buttercup sighed with relief as soon as everything stopped glitching. It would take a couple minutes for her hardware to stop trying to do a background check on everyone-and-thing she looked at, but she could function perfectly fine, nevertheless. "Thank you, Professor." She reached behind her head and unplugged the cord from her neck.
"Everything back to working order?" Bubbles, Buttercups sister, questioned. She'd risen to her feet and walked over, stand directly in front of Buttercup. "How many ridges in my finger print?" She held up a single finger.
There was a small box that appeared around her finger, followed by a numerous amount of dots. "One-hundred-fifty."
"That sounds outrageous. So I'm gonna assume it's correct." Next thing Buttercup knew she was being wrapped in a hug by the blonde. "Glad to have you back."
Buttercup rolled her eyes. She was never one for physical affection. However, Bubbles was. Needed it to survive, is seemed. She'd been touch-starved for so long, never being allowed to show affection in the lab the girls once called home. It was only after the girls were adopted by the Professor was Bubbles fully able to act upon her needs for physical touch. Showering affection any chance she got.
See, Buttercup might not of been a fan of it, but she'd of let her sister hug her for all of eternity if it meant letting Bubbles be happy. Happiness was something the girls knew very little of. Something that was a new idea to them.
The last couple of years they'd been introduced to many different emotions other than fear and a stone-cold face.
The doorbell chimed throughout the house. It felt out of place for the time of day. Nobody ever rang the door, or came knocking. Usually, the Professors' social life was kept strictly at work. It was for the girls protection, along with his coworkers.
"I wonder who's at the door." Bubbles eyes glowed an eerie yellow, her pupils narrowing into slits before it all shifted back to her usual baby blue.
"Have you taken your medicine, B?" Blossom grabbed her sisters face and examined it.
"I take it before bed and when I wake up." Bubbles mumbled.
"What's the dosage? Do we need to increase—"
"Girls, girls, girls." The Professor ushered. "Calm down. Bubbles is fine, Blossom. We had to stop Dinner early because..." his eyes traveled over to Buttercup.
"'Cause I'm a screwup." Said girl grumbled.
"No you are not, dear." The Professor placed a hand on her shoulder. "You can't help it."
Ding! Dong!
"Well that's odd." The professor muttered. "You'd think they'd of left after nobody answering the first time. Alrighty then, let's go see what's so important."
Bubbles clung onto Blossoms hand. Squeezing as tight as possible. Blossom gave a small squeeze back, giving a reassuring smile as well. Letting her sister know she was there for her.
Buttercup watched her sister's interaction. A small green box forming around each of their faces before an error occurred. Even if she grew up with them as her sisters, her database knew nothing about them. And that was fine by her, she knew them well enough without a box telling her. The three of them went through traumatic experiences. They were all there for the other when something happened. Bubbles screams would forever haunt Buttercups nightmares. Blossoms stone-cold expression as she was stuck with another needle would forever be burned into her mind. Even if her database knew nothing, Buttercup... she knew everything.
The four of them made their way upstairs. Bubbles dragged Blossom over to the window and peeked through the blinds. The two of them scanned outside to see if anything suspicious was going on. They saw a black SUV parked out front. Standing beside it was a tall bald man in a suit.
"Uh oh." Blossom muttered. "Looks like government agents of sorts."
"Government agents?" Buttercup made her way over and peered out the window. A small green box appearing around the dude by the car. "Agent Davin. Six-foot-three. Assigned as President Bellum's detail. Served eight years in the CIA before being moved over." Buttercup was reading through the list popping up. "There's more but it's confidential, so it'll take me a minute to retrieve."
"That's alright, Buttercup." The professor frowned. He looked through the doorhole and observed the man standing on the porch. "Girls, I don't know what's happening, but we'll figure this out okay?"
"Yes professor." All three girls said in unison.
The Professor exhaled then opened the door.
