Capítulo X- Entrando el bosque flameante
Falling trees shook the angry Earth below Patience's feet as the smoke fogged her vision. The respirator Mr. Davenport designed helped Patience breathe in purified air. She had been in the search and rescue for an hour with the comms in her ear to keep in contact with Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo. The party had split up to quickly cover more land. The wildfire had spread rapidly in the hot and dry California air. Sweat beads trickled down Patience's neck and face. Her suit had stuck to her body making uncomfortable movements during her search. The mission suits were already fire-resistant and they held up to their expectations, but sweat resistance was not one of them.
Wildfires weren't something new to Patience. In her area, they would start in the early summer and last until the late fall. Humans caused more than 80% of wildfires and this was one of them. A report came in from a trail of a discarded cigarette starting the fire. The bionic teenagers were called for a rescue mission. The camera's captured the footage of who entered and exited the park trails to give an estimate of the people in the fire. The bionic heroes rushed to suit up and headed to the rescue.
A screaming woman and a bark turned Patience's head to the left. Her cries for help were almost consumed by crackling fire and snapping branches. Patience changed her path to head in her direction. She surveyed her environment and kept her pace at a light jog. As much as she wanted to run to their rescue, she had to be smart and aware of her surroundings. The closer she got the more sounds she would hear, including a little boy's screams.
Patience found the woman and the barking dog. The little boy was nowhere in sight. The woman covered her face with her shirt, yelling, "SOMEONE, PLEASE! MY SON NEEDS HELP!" She tried to pick up the tree with her bare hands and her face scrunched up using all her strength.
"MA'AM! IM HERE TO HELP!" Patience shouted. The mask muffled her voice and the woman looked around to find her. She held the German Shepherd's leash tightly as she barked in her direction.
Patience looked up to see the trees burning from top to bottom. The tree that had just collapsed was knocked down by another up in flames. The boy's screams came from the tree yet to be burnt to a whole crisp. The tree had just ignited the tip of the tree the boy was stuck under. His mother was trying to lift up the middle of the tree and frustrated tears glistened in the fire.
"I'M HERE! I'M GOING TO HELP!"
The woman finally set eyes on Patience sprinting to her. She held the dog back recognizing the suit on her and begged, "PLEASE! HELP HIM! We were just going for a walk and out of nowhere this fire started!"
"Ma'am don't worry. I'm going to get him out," Patience assured. She pulled out a smaller respirator from her backpack and gave it to the woman. "I'm gonna need you to take a step back. Where is he?"
