He was a neurosurgeon, one of the the best. She was just starting off. He had been married with children before his wife left him before one day he received divorce papers in the mail. They had been alone ever since.
He took the day off early today. He knew Meredith wasn't busy today either so he thought he would stop by.
The kids were still at school and they would be for another hour or two. this was pretty much the first time Derek had ever really been in love, of course sometime in high school he thought he was in love because he was young and stupid.
Meredith was the only person he ever felt real feelings for. he had never felt this way about any girl. he had multiple girlfriends in high school but the only thing he was really interested in back then was sex and someone to make out with.
he met Addison in med school and they were friends for a while before they became friends with benefits but even Addison had a hard time getting him hard sometimes unless he was already horny.
If him and Meredith didn't work out he wasn't sure if he would be able to find someone he could spend the rest of his life with.
He was lucky enough that Meredith wasn't bothered with the fact that he was divorced with three kids and a single father, and worked full time as a surgeon and didn't have much time to spear.
He didn't know why she was okay with it but he didn't want to ask questions because he knew most women would run at the sight of dating a man with three kids knowing that if the relationship went any further they would most likely be involved with those children.
Meredith was fine with being a stepmother if it came to it and she was also prepared to have all three children hating her guts because in their little minds she would be the woman who was trying to replace their mother who they never saw anymore.
but she thought with her growing up with a mother that hated her it shouldn't be too hard to have young children hating her as well knowing she couldn't blame them. she knew that if she was in their position she would probably hate her too.
Derek wanted to spend the rest of his life with Meredith. he wanted someone who he could come home too, someone he could hold to make the bad days better, someone to help him make dinner, someone to help him put the kids to bed without worrying if she really wanted to be a stepmother to three young children.
or worrying if she would leave in the middle of the night too because she didn't want to take care of three children. if their own mother didn't want to take care of three children why would another woman want those children if they weren't even hers?
Addison didn't even want her kids, why would someone else?
But Derek knew that if Meredith wasn't all in then she would have broken up with him months ago. he made sure that when he met Meredith one of the first things she knew about him was that he was a single father of three that worked full time as a surgeon.
she had a shocked look on her face when he told her but she nodded and instead of changing the subject she started asking questions about the kids so she had more of a visual of them.
she asked about their gender, their age, what they looked like, and what their personality's were like.
it made him happy to hear that she wanted to learn more about his kids instead of just pretending that they didn't exist.
one of the first questions Meredith would ask him when they saw each other was how the kids were and if everything was alright with them when he looked upset.
she hadn't officially met his kids yet and she already seemed to somewhat care about them. if she ever heard that one of them was sick or if they had gotten hurt she would have a concerned look on her face and asked if they would be okay.
sometimes if they spend a little too much time together she would ask if the kids knew he was out or recommend that he should go home so he would be there when they woke up.
it wasn't because she didn't want to spend time with him, she did, she just didn't want the kids to feel like their father was giving more attention to his new girlfriend of instead of them.
It brought him comfort knowing that he didn't have to worry about Meredith dissing the fact that he had children.
he had tried dating in the past when Violet was around three or four and every time he would try talking about the kids to them they would ignore him or try to change the subject to something they found more interesting like shopping.
Unlike Meredith who liked hearing him talk about his kids. she admired his face when he spoke about his children. the way his face would light up when he would bring up something Violet had said at dinner or how well they Madeleine was doing in school or how good Michael was getting at baseball.
he truly cared about his kids and what was going on in their lives, not very many fathers felt that way about their kids.
Meredith didn't have that kind of parent growing up so she enjoyed that the person she was in love with was that kind of person, she didn't want to be the reason those children didn't have that anymore.
Meredith had never really thought about having children until she met Derek. even if she didn't want children of her own they would still be a big part of her life if she continued her relationship with Derek.. and she was fine with that.
as Meredith got to know Derek better she learned that it would be nice to have one or maybe two of her own... but she wasn't she how she would bring that up with Derek.
she knew he already had three children and that was more than enough but she also didn't want to lead him into the relationship too far before he found out only for her to find out he didn't feel the same.
Derek had mentioned that his mother had five children and raised them with his father so she knew it wouldn't be frown upon in his family but she also didn't know if he wanted the same with her.
it was one of those things that would break them or make them.
