He was a neurosurgeon, one of the the best. She was just starting off. He had been married with children before his wife left him before one day he received divorce papers in the mail. They had been alone ever since.
the next morning neither of them had an easy time waking up. they were both up late all night.
neither of then knew what time it was and they didn't want to know.
Meredith slowly started to wake up. she moved herself out of Derek's arms and rolled over onto her side.
"God... what time is it?" he groaned moving to lay on his back.
"I don't know.. it's your house," she yawned.
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"I don't know but my head is killing me," she groaned as she started to get out of bed.
"Did you get drunk last night," he said as he slowly sat up.
"No, why would I get drunk while watching your kids," she walked around to his side of the bed and checked the time.
"it's almost ten in the morning. don't you have work?" she spoke.
"No, I'm taking the day off. I'll tell them my daughter was almost kidnapped and they'll give me a day or two off," he sat up.
"That's it? how long would they give you if someone you knew died?" she sat down on the side of the bed next to him, placing a comforting hand on his leg.
"the same, and then you have to go back to work like nothing happened," he shrugged.
"Well I guess you are responsible for every life that comes into the hospital then, huh,"
"I guess. I don't even know why I chose being a surgeon.. I guess I just like the reputation," he shrugged.
"well doesn't it feel nice? saving a life?"
"Yeah, I guess. it gives the kids something good to look up to and it can give them a good childhood... I like that they don't have to grow up worrying about money and financial things..." he sighed as his mind wandered.
"That's good. that's your job as a father... some people can't do that even with help so it's good that you can do it on your one... you shouldn't have to but it's good that you can," spoke softly.
"it's a Sunday which means I have the kids all day," he pressed his face into the palm of his hands.
"Yeah, and you have twenty more years to go," she smiled.
"that's not even funny," he chuckled as she stood up.
"You said the Violet wakes up around this time on the weekends.. do you think it will bother her that I'm here?" she asked as she removed the clothes she was currently wearing and got dressed into the extra clean pair that Derek had put in his dresser recently.
"No, she likes you and she doesn't really think of it that way. she'll just think of it like a sleepover that she has with her friends. Madeleine knows and to be honest I don't think Michael really cares what we do. he'd be fine if I was in a relationship and he would be fine if I wasn't. just as long as you don't give him any trouble he'll like you," he also got changed into clean clothes.
"Fine. I can stay for a bit but I have things to do for the rest of the day," she sighed.
"What kind of things. you never really say what things but you just say things?" he questioned.
"My friends pregnant.. which would be a good thing only she wants nothing to do with having children.. her boyfriend sucks and when she told him she didn't want a family.. he said he was okay with it and she believed him but he started going onto he phone and found an app that tracks her when she's ovulating and started poking holes in the condom when she had chances of getting pregnant and he wont let her get an abortion, not like that's even a choice anymore but it is legal in Canada so I might take her their... she she's not sure she can do it because he'll hate her for it if he finds out," she said all at once.
"Wow... he sounds like an asshole," he replied.
"he is.. but she loves him and wants him to be happy and he says the only way to do that is a family," she buttoned her jeans.
"Do you think her mind would change.. after having the baby? some people are like that but some people simply just don't want kids," he asked.
"No, I think she would end up loving the kid but she wouldn't be able to give the child what it needed. she wouldn't have the motivation to because it's not what she wants... the only thing she wants is to be a surgeon but he doesn't understand that and he should,"
"..What about you?" he asked after a few seconds of silence.
"What do you mean?" she asked confused.
"Are you the kind of person that wants kids but is too scared to or are you only career driven?" he asked. they had never spoken about it, they had both thought about it but they had never mentioned their thoughts to each other about having children together.
she knew he had children and there was a good chance that he didn't want anymore and he knew that she knew that as well.
he also knew that their would be a good chance that she would want children of her own. she was young and she hadn't been through the same things he had.
"I-I don't know. if I were to have children the only person I would think about having them with is you but you've already lived that part of your life and I don't know if you would ever want to do all that again," she said looking down at the floor instead of him.
"I would be glad if you wanted to.. not now of course.. but if you wanted kids then I would be happy to have them with you... but if that's not what you want then I'm fine with the three I have. the balls in your court, Mer," he kissed her cheek lightly before leaving the bedroom, leaving her to think about what he had just said.
