He was a neurosurgeon, one of the the best. She was just starting off. He had been married with children before his wife left him before one day he received divorce papers in the mail. They had been alone ever since.
It had been a couple of days since Meredith had given birth. Her incision had healed enough for her to be able to go home.
The baby was still a little too small but they were able to take her home. They would just have to make sure she was eating enough for her to be able to gain weight.
They would have to take her to a Pediatrician after two days and every couple of weeks to make sure she was gaining weight correctly.
Dr. Bailey had brought her the discharge papers and signed them and was now waiting for Derek to come get them. She would need to use a wheelchair to get out of the hospital.
The kids hadn't visited her in the hospital yet. She wanted them to meet the baby when they were at home.
They would both be taking time off so they both be able to take care of the baby and he would be able to watch the older children while Meredith tended to the baby.
They had spoken about what they wanted to make the baby. They had come across a couple of names they liked but they had finally settled on a name they liked for her.
When Derek got off he helped Meredith into her a wheelchair and carried them both out.
"Have you told the kids yet?" She asked. "They know you'll be home when they get back from school, and that they'll have a new baby sister," he said.
He pushed them outside. He put the brakes on the chair. He took the baby's car seat and placed her in the car.
He buckled her in before shutting the door and helping Meredith in the passenger seat.
"I could have gotten inside myself," he said as he started the car.
"Yes and then tear your stitches, be admitted back into the hospital and then spend another couple of days in the hospital. Sound fun?" He said.
"Whatever," she rolls her eyes. He drove them back home.
Surprisingly the baby had slept the whole way home. So far she had been very well behaved and hadn't cried too much.
Meredith got out of the car before Derek could and he quickly went around the car and took out the baby carrier before Meredith could strain herself even more.
"I told you I would help you, don't be so stubborn," he said.
"And I told you I could do it myself," she said. "No, you can't. Wait here, I'll bring her inside and I will come and help you. Do not move," he said sternly before grabbing the diaper bag and going inside.
She waited outside feeling like an idiot who needed help just to walk. She understood as a doctor but as a person, she wanted to do it on her own.
Derek soon came out of the house and carried Meredith inside. "If you ever do that again I'll leave you for good," she said as he placed her down on the bed in their bedroom.
"Well that all depends if you get pregnant again," he said. "Please go get her," she said.
He left the room and brought the baby into the bedroom. He removed her from the carrier and gently placed her in Meredith's arms as she gently rocked the baby.
"Do you need anything else?" He asked standing next to her, staring at the little life they had just created. He was overjoyed that he was able to have another child, especially with Meredith. She was the perfect person to spend his life with raising their children.
"I'm hungry and it's almost four so you should go get the kids," she said.
"Alright, I'll pick up something on the way back, are you sure you'll be okay alone with the baby?" He said.
"Yes, we'll be fine," she said. "Alright, well, everything you might need is in her bag so I'll leave it here on the bed just in case and I'll move her bassinet next to the bed in case you want to lay down," he said placing the bag down next to her and moving the bassinet so it was right next to her and locked the wheels.
"Thank you," she said placing the baby down in the bassinet.
He kissed her on the lips and made sure she had everything before leaving to go pick up the kids.
