He was a neurosurgeon, one of the the best. She was just starting off. He had been married with children before his wife left him before one day he received divorce papers in the mail. They had been alone ever since.
When Derek arrived at the hospital he immediately asked one of the nurses for Meredith. they gave him a room number and he went searching for it.
he walked down many hallways before he found the one he was looking for. he pushed the door open and then he saw her.
there were around four doctors and two nurses around her bed, she had different wires and Iv's going into her body from all around.
the machines beeped at the nurses checked her vitals to make sure everything was how it was supposed to be.
"Meredith," he whispered to himself.
she was still unconscious and the laid her on the bed, tucking the thin blanket over her waist. it looked as if she had just gotten out of surgery.
"Richard," he spoke when he saw the familiar man.
"Derek, what are you doing here?" he asked as he moved to stand in front of men.
"Meredith, she's my girlfriend. what happened to her?" he panicked.
"there was a car accident, a drunk driver passed out at the wheel and crashed into her, she just got out of surgery... she had multiple internal bleedings coming from different places, we got most of them but there are a few small ones we're hoping will fix themselves.. her body's already going through so much and we don't want to put more on her than she can handle,"
"Well... is-is she going to be okay at least?"
"We.. we don't know one hundred percent yet. she just got out of surgery and she hasn't woken up once yet and we don't know if she is going to wake up... there a chance that she will and there's a good chance that she won't,"
"So there's a better chance of her not waking up then there is of a chance of her waking up??" he frowned. Richard said nothing in return.
"Where's the driver, is he here?" he stepped out of the room.
"Derek, no. he was here, he's fine, he had a few cuts and scratches but he's out of the hospital and they're taking him down to the police station,"
"So he's fine but she might not wake up!" he yelled.
"Look, Shepherd.. we're going to do everything we can to make sure she wakes up and recovers but she isn't doing too good at the moment,"
"Let me see her chart, I want to see how bad it is," he said walking towards Meredith's bad.
"Derek, no. in this moment you aren't her doctor, you're her boyfriend. so either sit in the chair and be with her or you're going to have to leave," he stepped in front of him and grabbed his arm.
"What am I going to do? sit here and wait for her to die!" he yelled.
"Derek, we don't know if that's going to happen, but until it does you shouldn't be expecting her to... just be patient with her and maybe she'll wake up,"
"Maybe? that's the best I get? a maybe, maybe she'll wake up and maybe she dies...? I was this close to buying a ring," he mumbled the last part as he sat down in the seat next to Meredith bed.
"What?"
"I was going to buy a ring and now she's going to die," he said with tears in his eyes.
"You know legally you can marry a dead person is they agreed before hand," Richard said, Derek looked up at him glared.
"How the hell is that supposed to help me?" a tear fell from his die.
"Sorry, I don't know why I said that. I'll leave you two alone," he said before leaving the room. the rest of the doctors and nurses had left a few minutes ago.
He didn't know what he was supposed to say, he knew a lot of people spoke to their partners when they were unconscious or in a coma but he didn't know what he was supposed to say to her.
Usually they would always have something to talk about, they had busy lives so there was always something going on.
But this time he couldn't think of anything to say to her. He was angry, he was in pain, he was scared. He was scared she would never wake up and he didn't know what to do about it.
He had never lost someone he loved so much, Meredith meant the world to him and now there would be a good chance she would never wake up.
He was angry that the person who did this to her was going to be just fine while she was laying in hospital with fifty percent to live.
It should be him in this bed, not her. She was supposed to be at his place that night, not in the hospital.
He wondered where they would be now if he hadn't called her. She would be asleep in her own bed and he would have fallen asleep on the couch at some point.
Or if that idiot had just stayed home and called it a night instead of getting in a car and putting his Meredith at risk.
He wanted to say so much but he couldn't find the words, they played over in his head but they stayed there.
He spoke to her an hour before, before when everything was fine, one minute she's in her car driving to his place and the next she's in a hospital.
He didn't know what to say to that.
