He was a neurosurgeon, one of the the best. She was just starting off. He had been married with children before his wife left him before one day he received divorce papers in the mail. They had been alone ever since.
it was long after the morning and almost three in the afternoon when Derek started to wake up.
his head hurt from all the crying he did the night before. he rolled on his back and pressed both his hands on his head trying to push away the pain.
he grabbed the clock next to him to check the pain.
he groaned when he saw it was almost three in the afternoon. he slowly sat up and got out of bed.
he went into the bathroom and took a quick shower and got dressed before the kids came home.
he went into the kitchen and ate something so his stomach wasn't empty before he take some pain killers for his headache.
not long after he heard his parents car pull into the driveway. he went into the living and sat down on the couch, waiting for the kids.
the front door opens and all three kids walked in with Derek's parents behind them. Derek stood up and went to greet them at the door.
"Violet, fell and scraped her knee at school, Michael got hit with a ball during recess, and Madeleine argued back when the teacher didn't let her go to the bathroom," Carolyn said closing the door behind her.
"sounds like a long day," he sipped his coffee.
"it was. are you sick dad?" Madeleine asked as she stopped to look at him.
"No, but something bad did happen," he said feeling the tears burn in his sore eyes once again.
"What happened?" Michael asked.
"Meredith was in a car accident last night, she was driving and a drunk driver passed out at the wheel and hit her car... she's in a coma at the hospital," he blinked to keep the tears at bay before drinking from his coffee again, which he had added some alcohol to.
"What?" Madeleine asked.
"Meredith's in a coma, she was in a car accident," he said again.
"is she going to be okay?" she had a bit of worry in her voice but she tried to push it to the side.
"We don't know, nobody knows, we just have to wait and find out,"
"So there's a chance she could never wake up?" Michael asked.
"pretty much," he nodded to his parents before he sat back down on the couch. the only thing he could was just wait, we would have to sit and wait until she woke up or till she died.
He felt helpless and he hated feeling helpless. He was a surgeon and his job was to help people in her case.
And as a surgeon he knew there was nothing he or anyone at the hospital could do. There was a fifty chance she would wake up and a fifty chance he would have to pull the plug.
"Have you been to the hospital today?" His mother asked him.
"No, not yet. I just woke up twenty minutes before you guys came home," he spoke.
"You slept until three in the afternoon? What about work?" She sat down next to him.
"What about it?"
"You didn't go?" She asked.
"No, I don't see the point in going. Every time I see a patient I'll just think of Meredith and how much I'd rather be helping her instead of some people I don't know, I've treated people who didn't deserve my help.. men who beat their wives, parents who abuse their children, and more... Meredith deserves the help more than they did and they got it but she doesn't," he spoke.
"Even if they don't deserve it it's still good that you help them, you don't help them because they deserve it, you help them because it's the right thing to do, even if they are horrible people," she said. She was happy her only son grew up to be a good man, unlike the majority of the world.
His wife left him and despite all the horrible things she had done and said to him and his children he never spoke badly about her to children knowing they were too young to understand.
"I know, I know.. I just... I don't know how to work in a world where they don't know how to help the people that actually deserve.. horrible people get to live and the good ones die... I never understood it before but I was never on the other end.. and now that I am it's even worse.. how am I supposed to raise my kids in a kind of world that can't save the very few people that are actually good," he sighed.
"why don't you go spend some time with the kids before you go to the hospital to visit Meredith, maybe you can take Violet with you?"
"What for? I can't answer any of her questions anyways... and I don't know if she should see Meredith that way,"
"Then take Madeleine, she's older she can handle it better.."
"yeah.. maybe," he stood up and went to the other room.
