He was a neurosurgeon, one of the the best. She was just starting off. He had been married with children before his wife left him before one day he received divorce papers in the mail. They had been alone ever since.
It was two days later and Derek had the house to himself. It was rare that he had the entire house to himself but the kids were all at sleepovers and his parents were out on a date and were staying at a hotel afterwards.
Which left him alone. The house felt very different when he was alone, it was rare for the house to be so empty, so quiet.
He hasn't had the time to see Meredith in the two days his parents had been in town, he had work and the kids and his parents were there so he was trying to spend time with him as well.
They called every day of course and texted each other in the mornings and before they went to bed and Meredith didn't seem upset about.
She didn't complain when he told her he had his parents that day, she didn't really ask for much from him.
But she had accepted that he was a busy person when they're relationship started so she wasn't surprised.
Even though Meredith seemed fine with it, he wasn't. He never got to see her, he couldn't stay the night, she couldn't stay the night and they couldn't have sex.
It would be a lot easier for the both of them if they didn't have to worry about Madeleine so much.
He understood that she was waiting for her mother to come back, but it had been over two years.
Michael and Violet had accepted it a long time ago and Madeleine needed to do the same.
She had no reason to dislike Meredith nor did she have a reason to still be upset about the divorce.
Of course she would prefer their mother married to their father like all children but Addison had chosen to leave.
She didn't have to move to LA when the divorce happened, she chose to.
But the divorce was two years ago, in that time she had to have accepted it, he didn't know what she was holding onto because there was nothing to hold onto anymore.
He didn't lie to her that morning. He told them all that their mother had left in the middle of the night, he didn't know where she had went or if or when she was coming back.
And after a few months he told them he didn't think she was coming back and that she decided to leave for good.
He had heard Addison talk about leaving all together multiple times but he never thought she would do it.
He figured it was one of those things that you say in the heat of the moment when you're upset. But it wasn't, she meant it.
He just needed to get Madeleine to be comfortable around Meredith and then they could stop feeling like that had to continue hiding it.
The kids knew about Meredith now and they didn't have a reason to hide it. Madeleine knew her parents weren't getting back together and it was time she accepted it.
He was done holding back. He wanted Meredith to stay the night and he wanted her to stay until morning and he wanted her to be there when he picked up the from their sleepovers.
He had called Meredith a around twenty minutes ago and told her to bring a pair of pyjamas, an extra pair of clean clothes for the morning and some other things she thought she might need for the next morning.

it was a few hours later and Meredith still hadn't showed up. he tried calling her multiple times as well as texted her but he hadn't gotten an answer.
he waited another twenty minutes before his phone rang and Meredith's name flashed across the screen.
"Meredith, where on earth are you? I tried calling you twenty times," he answered the phone.
"is this Derek Shepherd?" he heard a mans voice.
"Yes, who on earth is this?"
"this is Dr. Keller at Seattle Grace Memorial Hospital, I'm calling on behalf Meredith Grey. she's been in a car accident, there was a drunk driver and he passed out in front of the wheel, the front of her car was destroyed and she hasn't woken up, she was unconscious when we got to her," his heart sank to his stomach.
"I'll be there as soon as possible," he hung up the phone. he grabbed his keys and coat and got into the car and drove to the hospital.
