He was a neurosurgeon, one of the the best. She was just starting off. He had been married with children before his wife left him before one day he received divorce papers in the mail. They had been alone ever since.
It was another two weeks later and Meredith continued to feel sick.
She figured if she was Ill it would pass over time but it never did.
At work, her friends just told her she was pregnant. She didn't feel pregnant, but even if she did she wouldn't know what that felt like.
It had been six weeks since she began feeling sick.
She had also begun to notice she missed her period. Usually, it would just come and go, she never really knew when it would come so she didn't notice it hadn't come.
The only time she noticed was when she and Derek were talking about her illness and he asked her when her last period was.
That was when she realized she hadn't had her period in a while.
As she was feeling ill she decided to take the day off work. She didn't usually when sick but today she wanted to herself.
Right Derek had left for Derek she had taken the kids to school. On the way back she stopped by the drugstore and picked up three clear blue pregnancy tests.
She knew they were the most reliable tests out there. She had bought many of them in college after drunken one-night stands when they were both too stupid to remember to use a condom.
She had always taken the morning-after pill but she never knew how long it'd been before she took the pill.
She had never told Derek about the things she had done back then. He was best he didn't know.
She didn't want to know about all about the women he had slept with in the past, even if it was in high school. It's not something she wanted to know and she figured he felt the same.
She took both of the tests when she got home and proceeded to wait in bed for her timer to go off.
Of course, she wanted to tests to come back positive, she and Derek had been trying for almost five weeks, having sex every day, multiple times a day.
They would line up their breaks and one of them would go to the others hospital and then go to an on-call room.
It probably would have been much easier to conceive if they worked in the same hospice but they made it work.
But she didn't want to get her hopes up. She didn't want to she was pregnant until she knew for sure.
Even then she knew if the tests did come back positive a new fear would come up. Miscarrying was common in all women.
She had a stressful job and a stressful life, stress increased the risk of miscarriage. Or if she did make it past the risk of a miscarriage she would fear the child had some kind of illness or birth defect.
She had made sure she stopped drinking when they started trying. She no longer went out for drinks with friends.
If she did she would just order a water but she didn't want them to suspect anything since she was a big drinker when she went out and would usually end up drunk one way or another.
After a few minutes, her phone rang. For a second she thought it was her timer before she saw Derek's name flash on her screen.
She answered the phone and put it on speaker.
"Hey, is everything okay?" She answered.
"Yeah, everything's fine over here. Did you take all three kids to school?" He asked.
"Yeah, why?" She asked.
"I got a phone call from the school saying Michael never showed up to class. Are you sure he went inside?" He said as he was right about to go into surgery.
"Yeah, he went in with Madeleine," I say.
"Then where would he have gone?" He said.
"Derek, it's a private school, they have security there, if Michael tried speaking out they would have noticed. He probably just skipped class, a lot of kids his age do it," she said.
"Maybe, they said they'd call me if he missed any other classes but Madeleine and Violet showed up and everything. It's just Michael," he said.
"I'm sure he's fine, he probably just didn't like the class and hung out in the bathrooms instead of going," she said.
"Yeah, maybe you're right. I'll let you know if there's any updates," he said.
"All right, I'll talk to you later," she said.
"All right talk to you then. Love you, bye,"
"Love you too, bye," she said before ending the phone call.
Right as she ended the phone call her timer went off.
She got out of her and grabbed the tests from the bathroom. She got comfortable under the covers in bed before flipping over the test results.
Pregnant.
Pregnant.
