Lan Xichen was on a mission. For the longest time, he has been wanting to get something for Kaili. He had the perfect idea, he wanted to put a little working into his gift. He left Kaili with A'Yuan and Jingyi. It's been some time since she spent some time with the two little boys so she was to hang with them while Xichen had some things to do. Wuxian and Wangji went with Xichen as they wanted to help give him input on his idea. They trusted Kaili with the boys so they left them at the Hanshi and went to town.
"So what did you have in mind, to get her?" Wuxian asked.
"I need to just get some materials, but I was thinking about making her something," he answered, "I like to make things occasionally, especially if it is for someone important. I think a handmade gift would suit her most."
"Did you have any ideas on what to make?" Wangji asked.
"Some," he said, "before I say what I want to see if I can find what I am looking for."
"What are you looking for?" Wuxian asked.
"Pure white jade," Xichen replied.
"Alright," Wuxian said, "you made Liebing right? And that is jade right?"
"Yes," Xichen says, "working with jade can be difficult but it can be worth it."
"You are also going with white jade because?" Wuxian asked.
"She is a white snake," Xichen replied.
Then it clicked to both Wuxian and Wangji. If he needed white jade and said it has something to do with Kaili being a white snake, then he is making something that combines the two. They were very curious.
"Honestly, I feel like Lan Zhan and I are not needed as you seem to have it all figured out," Wuxian said.
"I do not mind being alone in this if you two want to head back," Xichen said.
"Since it is personal, we should let you be," Wangji said happily, "I know you would do the same for me."
Xichen nodded and watched the two walk away. Xichen sighed as he was finally able to look around properly. He went to a shop that was known for their good quality stones and minerals. Xichen looked for a while until he found a decent size chunk of glistening white jade. Xichen paid for it and put it in a Qiankun pouch.
Working on this gift was going to be more of a challenge. He wanted to finish it before their engagement party as it would announce to the sects of their engagement properly. He had a month to make it but hoped he didn't need that long. Kaili was usually a sleepy snake when she had nothing to do. Either that or she would sit outside in the sun for a few hours as it is getting warmer outside.
He had to ask Kaili if she could keep away from his work space for a while until he said it's okay. He had to say that it's a surprise and he didn't want to spoil it. Kaili completely understood and was happily lounging around as normal.
Xichen has a work space for when he needed to work privately. Since it was for Kaili, she was not to come it, otherwise he wouldn't have any issues with her there. As he worked, he could actually see Kaili lounging outside in the sun. It was actually perfect because he could use her snake as a reference. It actually took him only a week to make so when he was finished, he hid it in a Qiankun pouch in his robes for now.
After another two weeks, their engagement party was coming up so now he had the opportunity to give it to her. Kaili was currently sitting in the main room of the Hanshi at Xichen's desk in her human form. She had a scroll in her hand as she was bored and decided to read for a while.
Xichen cleared his throat, "am I interrupting your reading?" He asked playfully.
Kaili giggled, "not really, this book isn't as interesting as I expected," she told him.
"Hmm, well, you and I will have to go to town sometime and visit the book shop, they always have something new...unless you want to spend some time in the library," Xichen said sitting beside her.
"Maybe, but I have a feeling you wanted to talk about something other than books," she said rolling the scroll up and put it aside, "you now have my full attention."
"So, you remember when I had you stay out of my workspace for that one week?" He asked.
Kaili nodded, "I didn't like the distance but we do need some space every once in a while."
"I didn't necessarily want to distance myself from you but I just wanted to make something for you. I have yet to give you a courting and engagement gift. So I wanted to make you something," he said taking out a little sandalwood box and handed it to her, "I do hope you like it."
Kaili smiled, "I still need to do the same for you," she said taking the box.
"We were told that I'd ascend when we consummate, I think that is a good enough of a gift," Xichen said.
"Nonsense, I am getting you something and you will take it," she declared.
"Okay," Xichen agreed with a chuckle and pointed to the box in Kaili's hand, "I do hope you like it."
When Kaili opened the box, her mouth dropped open in shock. Inside was a white jade hair pin carved into a white snake. Kaili giggled as she got the reference. She gently set the box down and took out the hair pin. It was so beautiful and it was actually one of the first gifts she had actually ever been given. She then remembered that Xichen said he made it for her. He went out of his way to care such a delicate and intricate piece for her, she even started to cry as she felt so happy and loved by this man.
"This is so beautiful and I love it," she said happily and looked up at him, "I love you so much."
Xichen smiled and lightly held her face in his hands, "I love you too, and I cannot wait to live our lives together as husband and wife. I can make stuff for you anytime as well."
"This is just amazing," she said, "I am given things here and there but this is probably the first time anyone has really spent the time to do something this kind for me. This means so much to me."
"I will always love you, Kaili, and I will always remember to give you the love you deserve," he said and kissed her.
Kaili carefully set the pin down on the table and wrapped her arms around his neck. This was all she could ever want. The love of an amazing person and she has that. She looks forward to spending her life with Xichen.
