You were used to being alone, used to being used by people of power, and used to being a nobody. You had come to terms with this and so it was nothing but water off of your back when someone said something mean, you had heard a hell of a lot worse. Were you tired of it all? Of course, but who wouldn't be after twelve plus years of doing everyone else's dirty work. You were recruited by Shield a few years after Natasha, you were now only their back up plan. If things got out of hand, you were sent in.
You weren't close to anyone, learning that attachment only meant trouble for them. You had never met someone like Natasha though, she was similar to you in how she viewed her missions. The way you got there may have been differently but it made you similar, made you regret things you've done. You were unable to change anything about it but it still bothered you.
You were currently sitting, legs crossed, in the entertainment room at Stark Tower. You were cleaning your pistol, special issue and your most prized possession. Tony tried to take it and study it once, saying that he wanted to know why it was so special but you nearly beat him with the butt of the weapon. You were given this pistol years ago, it was just something you had become attached too not anything different about it.
"You treat that thing like it's a child" Tony grumbled taking a sip from his drink as he sat across from you. You ignored the billionaire mostly because you didn't have anything in common with him. He always tried to be friendly though you never understood why.
"Do you even know how to talk? I mean I see you here all of the time but I never hear you say anything to anyone. You know it's only common courtesy to at least acknowledge a person whose trying to talk to you." He lectured you looking bossy and cocky while he did so. You had the pistol put back together and all you needed to do was get the sights in check which you did using his head as target practice. You closed one eye and narrowed the other looking down the barrel and straight at Tony.
"You don't have to shoot him, I mean, most of us want to but you don't have to" Clint came in with Natasha close behind, she snickered and you gave a slight grin, amused with his statement. Tony was less than pleased,
"You can't kill me, I'm the most important person here!" he cried, he was one for dramatic appeal and he just went for it but it never did work.
You smiled, you weren't well known when it came to personality. Yes, they had all of your technical information and everyone of them knew that much about you, like you did with them, but you just didn't have much to say to any of them. You were really close with Natasha, Clint, and even Bucky because they were quiet and never liked to question you. You only knew Clint because of how close he was with Nat, which had you jealous.
She was everything you wanted to be, she was a good fighter and friend but still level headed and calm at the most important times. You had a crush on her for a long time but you kept it top secret along with pretty much everything else. You did not need Tony riding your back about anything personal, he was already irritating enough.
You managed to squeeze free from the group and started heading down to your level of the Tower, you heard footsteps behind you but assumed it was just another worker. You stopped at your room,
"Hey, what's the matter?" why'd it have to be her, of all people her. . .You turned and greeted her as you did everyone else with a deep frown. Tony always said it'd cause you to age like milk if you kept it up but you never listened to him. How were you suppose to just drop the past like it never happened and act like a happy carefree individual.
"N-nothing, I just don't like being around large groups" you cursed yourself for stuttering in front of her but you threw the thought away when she placed a hand on your shoulder.
"Don't let Tony get to you, he's just being an ass" she smiled "a royal ass" you pointed out and shared a small laugh with the redhead. You were a funny, kind person underneath all of the walls you built up. She got a chance to see it and it made her smile getting to see a different side of you that no one really did.
"Um, I should get some rest I'm back up for you guys when you confront Loki" you pointed out smiling as you shut the door as she walked away.
You were ordered to help out on the ground, Natasha and Clint needed some help. You were fresh and ready to go, ready to kick some alien ass as you met up with the two of them. You offered Clint some back up arrows and Natasha some spare ammo, getting a rushed thanks from Clint as he ran off to fight more. You grabbed Natasha's hand before she could run the opposite way,
"Be careful" you muttered but you were loud enough for her to hear "you're full of surprises, hunh?" she grinned making you grin "stick around and you'll see more" you let her hand go and she gave you a last glance before rushing off leaving you to defend this area until Hulk showed up. Your mind replayed her smile and you couldn't help but grin to yourself, maybe it wasn't so hard to let all of the past go and be carefree again.
