It was currently one in the morning and while everyone else in the tower was asleep you were not. You should be out in the middle of a dream without a care in the world but you suffered from chronic spells of insomnia. You have suffered from it since your childhood, something you wish you hadn't because as a child the shadows were scarier than the ought to have been. That's in the past though and didn't help any right now.

Your mind being the unusual monster it was always took you on a trip through your happiest or saddest memories during these spells. It wasn't like you liked doing these things to yourself and the team was more than understanding seeing as how each had some form of the same thing. Tony would often talk about it with you and so would Bruce, both offering you sympathy and medicinal ways to fix the problem but you would turn them down. The last thing you needed was to rely on the meds to get you to sleep each and every night.

Natasha and Clint would spend occasional time with you but usually were too busy with their own lives to worry about yours and you understood that. Thor was only slightly more helpful by offering you a strong knockout drink from Asgard that you had considered until he told you all of the horrible side affects and you decided it was best to pass on his offer. Then, there was Steve. Steve was one of the most understanding of not only the group but off all the people you had told.

Each time you were wounded by the sad memories or the moments of doubt in your life he was there to offer you the guidance you had needed to get through. When you were simply unable to sleep without the memories bothering you and you needed someone to pass the time with, he was somehow always around. You were sure that it was simply luck or coincidence and the thought made you frown. You wanted it to be more because he wanted to be around you, that he was worried about you but you knew better. You were simply love-struck and blinded as a result of the affections you felt towards Steve.

You sighed heavily and, as quietly as possible, headed towards the familiarity of the kitchens soft glow. It was the only place you knew of that was uninhabited at night when you knew everyone was sleeping. It wasn't hard to tell if someone was up or not, everyone headed towards the kitchen and made something. Noise in here was unavoidable.

Your mind drifted as you sipped on the tall glass of milk you poured yourself, mostly working on autopilot as this was something you did very often when you couldn't sleep. You were unaware of anything around you, the noise of the silver refrigerator opening and shutting didn't make you stir and neither did the movement of the chair next to your own. The only thing that brought you back around was Steve's voice calling out to you.

"Can't sleep, hunh?" He took a small drink of the same thing you were mindlessly drinking and you nodded.

"Something bothering you this time or is it one of those other times?" He offered you a smile, as kind as he always was.

"I'm not sure, really, but I'll be alright." You gave him an unsure smile, his faded.

"Oh, alright." He stood, taking his cup to the sink after offering to do the same with your own. You let him also letting the silence fill out the rest of the space between you both.

You were close with Steve, you liked to believe it to be at least. You loved being around him from the moment you had met him. You were introduced through Clint and from then on he was who you went to when you needed anything really. There wasn't much you did when you didn't think about whether or not Steve would enjoy the activity. Be it a job in Central Park or watching some old movies on the couch of the entertainment room of the tower, you really enjoyed his company and found any reason to ask him to tag along.

"Hey, come on, I want to show you something." He offered you his hand, which you took with a great amount of uncertainty.

He walked with your hand in his up to the roof of the tower, a place you had to admit was pretty terrifying. No amount of starlit beauty could remove the fact that you were on the roof of a tower and your fear of heights may not be severe but this was certainly a cause for alarm.

"Why are we out here? I mean don't get me wrong it's pretty and all that but, do, um, do we need to be on the roof to see this? The floor below's view is nice too. . ." You muttered holding onto Steve's arm at this point, unconcerned about the closeness.

"Relax, I will not let anything happen to you. If it makes you feel any better we can sit here, right next to the stair back down, okay?" You nodded after making a grunting noise to signal your apprehension with the situation.

"You know, this is where I come when I can't sleep or the memories get to be too much for me. You know, it's hard to be the hero everyone expects you to be when you're afraid and in your mind nothing more than a coward. I've spent a long time alone out here, waiting for a reason to bring someone out here and tell them all of this, I'm glad it was you. You mean a lot to me." Your heart was already racing from anxiousness but now it was a fluttering mess and your mouth twitched into a goofy smile.

"I understand, you know, Cap, you mean a lot to me too." You didn't know what else to say and so you leaned your head on his shoulder.

Each moment spent in silence lulled you to sleep, second by second you were slowly realizing that you were unable to walk any longer and you were falling asleep. The very last thing you felt was Steve's hand run along your cheek and move a small strand of hair from your face to its original position next to your ear. The last thing you heard was Steve's distant voice whisper,

"I found your cure"
