It was a rainy day, similar to the day when he left. He had up and left with his best friend Steve Rogers to join the army and serve his country. You, even though you were seriously worried for his well-being, supported him. You love him, want nothing but the best for him and Steve. They had been your friends for as long as you could remember and so you would always be there for the two of them.
You hadn't heard a word for anyone, nothing from Steve or Bucky and not a word from Peggy. This wasn't uncommon but it never made you feel good. It gave you the worst feelings, ones that kept you up at night and kept you always near the phone-just in case. You were sitting on your couch, reading an old book that Bucky had given to you for your sixteenth birthday when you thought everyone had forgotten. You remember that day fondly. The book was tattered, spine nearly split in two and pages dark and smudged but you knew it so well that, that didn't matter much.
You sat the old book on the coffee table in front of you. Something was telling you, a gut feeling or maybe intuition, that you needed to call their divisions office. You had only ever called once and that was when you mother passed, it was still such a fresh wound.
"Hello, Peggy Carter at your service?" you had never felt more relieved to her her voice.
"Hey Peg, it's me." You said into the large phone that rested softly against your cheek and ear.
"What's happened now? You know I can't idle chat right now?" You rolled your eyes at her like she could see you.
"Are they alright? I have a bad feeling, Peggy." You said seriously as you plopped in front of the window of your apartment to watch the rain fall harshly down.
"I haven't received word yet, I promise they are fine just take some time and relax." She wasn't ever great at making you feel better but you knew she couldn't talk much longer.
"Fine, but call me if anything happens. I mean it Peggy, call me and tell me."
"Alright, bye."
"Bye." You clicked the off button and tossed the phone onto the pillow nearby.
You sat in the same position for so long that you had lost feeling in your legs. You couldn't take it and decided that a bath was in order. You were hoping, in vein, that it would make you feel better. The bubbles resting against your skin and music playing from the radio right outside of the bathroom made you finally close your eyes.
Yes the bath was nice but it still didn't make you feel any better. Walking into your room after getting dressed you noticed the one red light flashing on your phone. It was blinking to let you know you had a message one it and you felt your heart lurch into your throat. Clicking the button on the docking station for the phone you listened to Peggy's message.
Hey, I, um, I don't know how to tell you this but Steve came back. Bucky wasn't with him, he said Bucky died-fell from a train. I'm so sorry, sweetie, I am so sorry.
You couldn't breath, couldn't feel anything but your heart breaking. You had thanked everything that you left Bucky with a smile. Thanked everything that you had been able to give him a hug, but that did not make up for the fact that he was not coming back.
That night was one full of memories, tears, and no sleep. You had felt this same kind of pain only too recently when your mother had died but now him? You had Steve and Peggy but they weren't him. Sure, they were two of your best friends but they couldn't comfort you like he could, they couldn't make your heart flutter with a small grin.
You were curled up on the couch, three weeks after being told of Bucks passing and you still couldn't believe it. You had sort of spiraled into a dark hole that you didn't want to get out of. A knock at the door made you jump, you hadn't had a visitor in a long while.
"Yes?" You said as you answered the door noticing a familiar stranger at your door.
"Do you need something, sir?" You had not been aware of Steve's transformation so you didn't recognize him.
"It's me, Steve?" With wide eyes you let him in, happy to have him home again.
"You can sit down." You motioned towards the couch where your pile of blankets were sitting in a heap. A long silence enveloped the two of you, neither of you knew what to say to one another until he broke that silence.
"I, um, here." He handed you an envelop and you eyed it curiously.
"What is this?" You asked glancing up at him as you opened it slowly and neatly.
"Just read it." He said and you unfolded the letter. Dog tags hitting your lap as the letter finally opened completely, you lifted them up and read the name:
Barnes, James B.
107th Infantry Division
It had listed his social security number and his blood type as well but you already knew that, it was his name that made your throat tighten. You ran one hand through your messy hair turning your attention to the letter that sat in your other hand.
Hey Doll!
If you're reading this, well somethin' bad's happened. Don't worry though, I may not be there physically but I know I'm in your heart and your memories. There is so much to say. . .where to start? I suppose I should start with how I feel. I've had these feelings locked up for so long, so very long that I had to tell them to you one way or another. I love you. Plain and simple, I don't need to sugar coat those words because they say exactly what I need them to. There is a list of things about you that I love. Your smile, the way your eyes light up when you see Steve and I, and how beautiful your voice is when you sing in the shower like no one is home. I'm so sorry I broke my promise to come home to you. I want you to be happy, even if I'm not there. Please, Darlin' , keep Steve in line for me and keep smiling. I told him to give this to you, just in case. Don't forget me, but don't grieve forever because you deserve happiness and grieving for me isn't going to make you happy. Do you remember your first trip to the carnival? The one, right up the road from our houses? We got into so much trouble trying to sneak into the park when it had closed but we couldn't help but spend that time laughing! Your laugh was so cute, you snorted and then made a funny little face before laughing harder. I had never seen such a wonderfully beautiful woman until then and from that point on, I only fell harder for you. Do you remember when you held my hand when you were scared? How I made all of those corny jokes just to make you laugh, to make you feel better? I remember them all, I could never forget them. So, keep those as my memory. Keep the happy ones and don't dwell on the sad ones because, I love you.
~Love, Bucky
Hot tears were rushing full force down your cheeks, you were happy and sad all at the same time. You choked on the sobs that wanted desperately to escape your lips. You handed Steve the letter and with each sentence his eyes began to water as well. He was his best friend and despite their occasional spats he was such a great man. Your cries echoed through your apartment and all you could do was clutch the metal in your hands and cry into Steve comforting arms. All you had left of your Soldier was his dog tags.
