"What are you doing here?" Kao looked up startled from the sudden question in the silence. He closed the book in his hand and stood up.
"Ahh... Maha wanted to see you before bed" Kao explained pointing to the tiny body sleeping soundly on the bed.
Pete let out a heavy sigh from his tired body. He left his tab on the corner of the bed, lifted Maha in his arms and walked out. Kao's shoulders dropped as soon as Pete was out of sight. He straightened the bed Maha slept in, checked if the tumbler has water, placed Pete's coat and tab in their places and then rechecked the room one last time before leaving.
On his way back to his from Maha's room, Pete crossed Kao and stopped.
"You should let her sleep alone, Go back to your room" Pete Instructed.
Kao ignored Pete and kept walking.
"Kao, You should stop spoiling her, I thought you are the one who studied Psychology" Pete pointed out
Kao stopped and sneered turning to Pete.
"That's right, Children should not be spoiled. What I am doing is called Guarding, If you stop spoiling them they will be at most disappointed and sad," Kao took a step closer to Pete... "But if you stop Guarding them, Pete, That is when they get Traumatized, Fortunately unlike you, I know the difference, Because as you said I am the Psychologist here" And without waiting for Pete to respond, Kao walked away.
The next day during lunch break in the Psychology depart, all five Assistant professors were around the table chatting and sharing food.... "Damn, Kao, You have no idea how jealous we are of you, A rich husband and a pretty daughter, Man, You have won in this life" Jeremy, one of Kao's colleagues commented
"And I hate how he keeps showing off, 'I need to pick up Maha today', 'Pete wants me to attend this lunch meeting' and on and on and on, I mean dude, do you ever acknowledge us single souls?" Tim whined
Kao shook his head smiling.... " Ace, I will take the evening class today, My Mom is going to pick up Maha, so I can stay till late"
"Dude, If your daughter is not going to be home, Just use that time to spend alone with your husband, Why do you want to do overtime? Poor Pete, How is he dealing with someone who doesn't even have one romantic cell in them?" Nor expressed his disappointment in his friend
Kao rolled his eyes and walked away with his emptied meal box.
"You are late" Pete stopped Kao in the living room that evening
"Ya, I had to take the evening class" Kao nonchalantly replied
"Where is Maha?"
"She is with my Mom" Kao shrugged
"What? Why? If you are too busy to take care of her just tell me, Why would you let her spend a night outside home?" Pete raged
"Hmmm... I texted you that Maha is going to spend her Wednesdays with her Grandmothers alternatively, You didn't reply, why are you questioning me now? Also, Didn't you tell me that the sole reason you married me was to take care of Maha's upbringing" Kao calmly questioned back
"That doesn't mean, You can do anything with her, This isn't called taking care, Why don't you just tell me you got bored and want to laze around" Pete kept raging
Kao took a deep breath to maintain patience..."Pete, kids her age need to spend time with their Grandparents, Getting exposed to their experiences and outlook makes children become strong and mature adults, If it was possible, I would have asked her grandparents to come live with us, But since that was not an option, I thought of this alternative. This is the last time I am answering you, If you question my methods again, You will be taking over Maha's responsibility" Kao turned away and walked to his room.
