"Don't venture further below this point, Y/N. The others lurk where we can't see them."

Merfolk called her 'Nana'. She always kept her white hair in a tight bun, held together by straight pieces of coral. Her tail was shorter than others, and was a light green color. Nana had no other name, and served as a mentor to the community. Sometimes, she'd make the voyage across the sea to help others. For now, she would stay where you lived.

Your tail happened to be your favorite color, which you took immense pride in. Days were spent constantly grooming your scales, keeping them shiny and smooth. At the moment, you watched Nana package snacks for the younger children. Both of you were a few hundred feet below the surface, probably no more than three hundred. You and everyone else weren't allowed to go deeper.

"But why? What's so different about them compared to us?"

Nana sighed, wrapping the last piece of fishnet around the diced fish. She rubbed the crows feet of her eyes, and put a hand on your shoulder.

"They like to prey on the defenseless people above the water. Once in a blue moon, they also have a craving for us."

"...Us?"

The conversation ended after that.

You were no longer a child, but instead a young adult. There was no need to expand your education, so you took the liberty in volunteering alongside Nana in schooling the younger children. It was now recess, and the children giggled hitting the kelp-woven ball back and forth. You watched from afar, patting down your already smooth scales. For a few moments, you closed your eyes. All was peaceful, until you flinched at the sound of screaming children.

"Oh, no! The ball!"

Several children gathered around in a circle, peering down into the black depths below them. There was no life to be seen, not even scraps of food that floated up. You parted the tiny crowd, staring down below.

"Chu' hit the ball downwards, and now we can't find it!"

"I did not! Gabby was the one who-!"

"-Enough! I'll get the ball, everyone stay up here."

They all swam further up, quickly losing interest. You would've followed them, but kelp growth had been sparse as of late. That was the last ball, and if there was no replacement, Hell would swallow up the ocean.

Your heart beta furiously the further you swam down. From the confines of your top, you pulled out a clam. It opened its mouth, spewing out a bright light.

The water was quickly turning cold, and you gasped when you couldn't see the sunshine anymore. How far had you swam down? Where was the ball? You angled the light downwards, huffing when you still couldn't see the sandy bottom.

A few more minutes passed, and your fears started to creep up your spine. There wasn't any other fish. Why? Further above, the waters were always teaming with fish. Even down below, there should've been some variety. What was going on? Where was the stupid ball?

"Grab her."

A hand clamped over your mouth, their sharp nails digging into your cheek. Merfolk like you didn't have sharp nails. You thrashed your tail, using all your strength to beat it against the body that held you in place.
