It had been years, but down in the sea, there was no aspect of time. Years had seemed like mere days. Y/N picked the pearls out of her hair, grumbling when a few became tangled.

Her skin had paled due to lack of sunlight, and her hair became brittle. All she wanted was a mirror, or maybe a friend. He refused. His reasoning was that he himself was all Y/N needed.

Every once in a while, a small stream of sunlight would flood in through a crack. Y/N would hold her hand against it, begging to feel the warmth from so long ago. Down in the water, it was unbearably cold. But alas, the sun shifted its place and left Y/N alone once more.

"Y/N?"

She hated his voice. She hated the way he lulled her into a trance when she wouldn't comply. Y/N despised the way she'd become trapped, subject to the horrors he brought.

Again and again, she recoiled at his touch. Like every other time, his nails raked across Y/N's skin just to frighten her. It was never enough to make her bleed, but it was still a warning.

"Your heart sounds erratic. What's wrong?" he asked, weaving more pearls into her hair. Shoto merely brushed away the ones she had ripped out, frowning when their perfect shape had been diminished. Y/N had no idea how much bartering it took to get those!

"I don't wanna talk." Y/N mumbled, fighting the urge to rip the new pearls out. The siren sensed her inner turmoil, and so he wrapped his arms around her midsection. He couldn't describe the feeling he experienced upon feeling the skin of her legs. Shoto wished he had a permanent pair of his own.

"Why not? I brought more gifts, just for you!"

He presented a tiny music box, easing it into her lap. Y/N didn't have the energy to turn the key. She doubted it would even work. All she could do was numbly stare at it.

"...Do you not like the color? I can always—"

"—I just want to be left alone, Shoto."

While he didn't necessarily feel anger, there was something similar that coursed through his veins. He didn't like being told no, especially by the one he cherished most. What could he do to change?

Ah.

"I understand...I'll be back, Y/N."

The sudden shift unnerved her. As she watched him swim away, Y/N couldn't help but feel strange. Her eyes drifted down into her lap, examining every detail of the music box.

She liked it, somewhat.

While Y/N played with her new toy, Shoto had a long swim ahead of him. During the journey, he felt his heart crack more and more. He kept telling himself it was for Y/N. Would she finally then like him? After their first night together, he understood what he did was terribly wrong. If he could take it back, he would.

It was a trade. A very, very dangerous one. As his mind was warped and probed by the sea witch, he could feel a tingling in his tail. Soon, the sensation doubled. A hesitant movement here and there, and a brush of his hand against the new limbs.
