"Why are you scared, Tamaki?"
It started during childhood, and progressed into adolescence. Every day was filled with you. It was a requirement. If Amajiki couldn't go without talking to you for one day, he'd lose his marbles.
A regular day of junior high, sitting with his only friend at lunch. The food wasn't very good, but the boy was starving. After exiting the lunch line, Amajiki realized he had forgotten his utensils. His social anxiety kept him rooted to the seat, unable to fetch what he needed. You noticed his inner turmoil, casting a glance to his tray.
"Did you want me to go up there and get you a spoon? Fork?" you asked, taking a bite of your own food.
He gulped, slowly meeting your gaze as his cheeks burned. You tilted your head towards the utensil dispenser, nonverbally asking again. Amajiki nodded, looking back down to his tray.
You abruptly left the table, grabbing both a fork and spoon for your friend. It only took a quick minute, and so you returned to your seat. He took the fork and spoon from you, giving a small smile as thanks.
Every now and then, he'd remember that day. He still hadn't improved on his skills when it came to being social, but that was okay. Amajiki had you to talk to; he didn't need anyone else. You were easy to communicate with. Why couldn't everyone else be like you?
Small sparks of guilt flooded his being realizing he was holding you back. He didn't want you to be around others without him, but just couldn't muster up the courage. Rather than going to parties and such, Amajiki preferred being alone with you. Such a scenario was taking place now, with both of you at his house. He purposefully flunked his tests, wanting an excuse for a private study session. And of course, you wouldn't deny him the pleasure of doing so.
"Tamaki, you just need to look a little harder-"
"-I am! It doesn't make sense!"
He lied, fully understanding the problem on the paper. It was just a tactic to make you stay longer. Amajiki pretended to become frustrated, laying his head down onto his arms.
The hands he loved to feel caressed his face, tilting it up to meet your eyes. But as always, there was something missing. You didn't feel the same spark as he did. While there was genuine love, it was only platonic. What did he have to do to make you feel something else?
"I know it's frustrating, Tamaki," you said, ruffling his hair. "But please don't get mad at me. I'm only trying to help, okay?" it stung when your hands left his face, returning to rest in your lap. Amajiki felt like he'd been slapped.
"W-Wait, I didn't mean it like that! Y/N-"
"-You have two more questions left, Tamaki. I need to get home soon!"
What was that feeling in his throat? It felt as if someone had a tight grip from the inside, silencing his words. Along with his quenched throat, his eyes became hot. He instantly recognized the tears forming, and tried to blink them away. The only thing to calm him down was your face, but he didn't want you to see his tears.
"...Tamaki-?"
You had caught a glimpse of his glassy eyes, and prepared for apologize. He had leaped forward, mashing his lips against your own. They felt incredibly soft in contrast to their chapped appearance. Never before had you seen such confidence rise from your friend, but this was concerning.
