Dabi x Reader
***
You dreaded looking up, because each time, you see a small flicker of those cerulean flames that haunted your dreams. They burned wherever you went, hurting both you and others.
Sometimes, you'd hear him chuckling in the dark. He would say the most awful things, yet whisper sweet nothings afterwards. You knew that he truly did love you, but yet it wasn't normal. Dabi was always hurting others who treaded too close. They'd be left charred, just like him, albeit worse.
The neighborhood was so dark, and so quiet. The suburbs of Tokyo could be quite nice a night, and were usually safe. Crime was sparse in more rural areas in comparison to the city. Being quirkless wasn't as bad when living where you did. You had your own house, car, and a stable job at quite a young age. Everything was safe.
But then, you made the mistake of accepting a new job in the city. Every single day, a new quirk-related crime took place. You'd see it on the news, shaking your head in disappointment. As long as it all stayed away from your life, you couldn't care less.
It was too bad when your work building was compromised, held hostage and broadcasted live to the whole country of Japan. You stayed huddled in the corner, hoping the villains wouldn't notice your presence. One of them was a young girl, not much younger than you, and she was slicing a thin layer of flesh off of a young man you didn't know too well. She laughed maniacally, and then stared starstruck at the blood oozing from his arm. A man in a top hat recorded the interaction, and then said something to the audience watching.
The corner you hid in was dark, covered by shadows. You were small enough to be shrouded completely, but the man covered in wretched, burned flesh took notice of your presence. Without alarming the others, he took a seat beside your hiding spot.
"You're hiding in the shadows, like a frightened mouse. It makes you look weak." He produced a small lighter, and lit a cigarette. One puff of smoke, and he let out a guttural laugh.
Your body shook as you tried to curl yourself into a smaller, less noticeable ball. It only made the scarred man laugh harder, nearly drawing the attention of the other villains.
"Am I that horrible looking? I haven't even burned you yet," he then sighed, producing a small blue flame on the tip of his finger. It was drawing closer to your cheek, nearly licking it until his finger paused. "Actually, I shouldn't ruin that pretty face of yours. It would be a waste, wouldn't it?" As quick as it came, the flame was extinguished.
The same hand that was close to your cheek decided to rest against your hip, harshly pulling you against the man's side. He only chuckled when you gasped, desperately crawling to get away from his hellish self.
"Behave, or I'll make sure you're next." You weren't sure what he meant by that, until his moved your head to look at the scene before you. The same young man from before was being sliced to bits, yet he couldn't scream. His mouth stayed open, trying to let out sound, but nothing came. His eyes bulged, looking at everyone and pleading with them to help. Then, his frantic gaze landed on you.
You were running, not caring if anyone thought of you as crazy. The smell of burning wood was sharp, and it stung your nose. Something was telling you that he couldn't possibly forgive you this time. Too many promises you had broken, making Dabi do irrational things.
None of the street lamps would come on. The sidewalk was dark, and you were afraid of losing your footing with each hurried step. Your exhale of breath was too loud. He was going to eventually find you again.
