My Decision

It was Election Day, and we closed the office to work the election.   I was the Judge, Judy was the clerk, and Paul was the inspector.   We worked at Jerusalem Baptist Church.   It was a slow day so we did a lot of talking.   The other judge and clerk were pretty cool.   They kept to themselves a lot and Paul asked probing questions,

"So, have you talked to your mom?"
"Too much."
"Does she want to meet him?"
"In hear heart yes, but her head no.   She is scared he will reject her."
"Why?  Your mother is just beautiful.  She's one if the classiest ladies I know."
"My dad, um Rob, was mean to her."
"I did her divorce.  I know.   Look, he has a trial and we need to get through that.  Mr. Chew and I know each other..,  after the trial I will talk to Ben.   Johnny needs to know what a great gal you are and her mom are."
"What is he like?"
"I met him once.   You'll find out."

I text Sadie.  Work is hard, as she works for the paper.   She farts around on Facebook all day, but I ask how she is doing.  She says, "Jade, just don't have the spoons today.  Sorry."  I asked what that meant and she said, "I just don't't have the time to explain.  Look it up."

      "You okay?"  Judy asks.
"Yeah."
"Sure?"
"Positive."

"Break up with her,". I tell myself in the bathroom stall.   "Yes, but the One you love thinks you're a fucking carpet muncher."

"We have a wedding this weekend and if things suck, I will break the fuck up with her,".

I look at my underwear.   There is a spot of blood.  Great, I have two pads, it's one.  I hope I make it.   I text Sadie for some more and she says, "Can't you ask your mom?"   I told her she was at work and I say, "I would do it for you."   She says, "Yeah, under durest!  I ask you one fucking thing and you get all huffy, like it's killing you!"  She then says, "if things don't improve on your end, I am seriously reevaluating WHY we are together.  You are all lip service.   You think you are the shit because of WHO your dad is and I am not liking it."   No it wasn't one thing, it was driving her across town.   It was taking her to appointments when I was throwing up all day and she told me to "just sit in the car with a bucket" and I was praying diarrhea didn't hit. It was going to the Salvo and I have the flu and I am shivering and crying,   Everything is so one sided with her,

The day is over and we go to headquarters.  Mom is there as one of the candidates is a client and friend,  "you look tired,  baby.  Go home and sleep."    I start crying,

     "You okay?"
"My period started today and I asked for some pads and she acted like I was bothering her."
"Dump the bitch. You could have called me.
"But I am in love with Scott and he loves Lauren."
"I know how you feel, but don't live a lifetime of regrets."
"Mom, I told  Paul I want to meet Johnny."
"Why?  He has his life and the trial. You tell him I don't want to!"
"Mom, I think you need to tell him how you feel. He needs to meet you and know what a good job you did with me."

Now she is crying. On the corner of First and Harrison, she is crying. She is shivering and crying.

"Why mom?"
"I don't want them to see me and his ugly I have gotten."
"Mom, does he look like Gilbert Grape?"
"He is still beautiful. I am not. Please, rescind that offer."

I wasn't going to do it. Anyway, he was knee deep in a trial. He needed to meet my. Mom.  He needed to meet me. This was my decision.
