My favorite Christmas album was Chet Atkin's Christmas Album and mom played that every year. It was freezing cold and the pipes froze at Charisse's so we were all together at my mom's house. Her poodle was sort of accepting of the two rough and tumble pit bulls. I kind of wanted to be alone with my feels this Christmas Eve, but since Charisse had no water I couldn't let her go to her parents, who surprisingly DID have water. I guess the house was for pretty and impressing other people. Charisse was like that with her designer clothes, perfect hair, name dropping. I would find out what saying Wal Mart Shoes would cost me.
"This is nice," she said, toasting me in bed.
"It is. I wouldn't mind having this house."
"Do you think that they would sell it to you, or would you have to buy it?"
"I really haven't thought of it."
"Well you have to think of those things, Jade. You are so stupid sometimes. When I was 28, I was already working for the city in a managerial position."
She really knew how to make me feel stupid. I looked at the frosted window wishing I were with Scott and none of this had happened. Lauren. Charisse.
My phone makes the notes that my text say. The first one is from Lily Rose. "Hey girl, wishing you and you girl the best Christmas." Charisse insisted on a selfie. I have no makeup on and a ratty tee shirt, Charisse looks stunning in her pajamas, pronounced "puh-jahm-ahs". We sent it to Lily Rose who said, "God you look like a feminine version of your dad circa 1993." We laughed. Mom wished me a Merry Christmas and then Johnny. I had a weird feeling something not good was going to happen to Johnny. Mom said she'd call me when I got home tomorrow.
"I have to go to the UU Church as I am speaking and would love to have my best girl look presentable," she said. "You have your mom's closet." I grabbed a top of my mom and my leggings. I didn't have her hips, butt, and thighs yet. Charisse and I drive through town. It's a sleepy Sunday, as it is Christmas and it's very cold. Three below.
"It's cold."
"I was thinking, after Christmas, we check on the house and go back to your mom's for a day."
"I do have to pick up Scott at one tomorrow."
"I thought we'd do lunch."
"Can we do it later? I promised him last week I would pick him up."
"Fine. We can just do it later. I wanted to spend the day with you."
"We're staying at my mom's."
"I just love being with you. You are the best girlfriend I have had."
How could I break up with her? How? I began to feel guilty.
Rob's Mom's house was the usual decorator's dream. She had totally new furniture from last summer. "Jadeeeyy! It's so nice to see you. You look so pretty!!! You could be a model!" I smile and thank her. "Hi Charisse." She used that tone with my mom. She doesn't like her. Grandma is in the kitchen. She looks beautiful. Heather is with her, Rob's sister. "My brown eyed doll!" She says. "You are prettier each and every time I see you." I said, "I don't know about that, but fatter." Charisse called me fat the other day and ordered me a salad. She didn't even let me order. She said, "I am doing this for your own good." Dad/Rob came up to me and said, "Still munching that carpet." and I would say something I would regret. "Extra shag," I joked. Charisse had a death stare on me. It was just me, Rob and her out on the deck.
