"And then she ran?" I ask Aaliyah.

"Yeah, she better have after all that shit she was saying." She looks at me.

"You done?"

"Yeah, look." I look in the mirror. We were bored and she asked if she could give me a shape up and trim. I don't really do anything to my hair besides trimming it every month.

"Do you like?" She asks running her hands through my hair.

"Yeah. I love it." And I actually do. I look the same but totally different. She tapered the sides and trimmed the rest.

"Good." And I take her hand and kiss the inside of her wrist.

"Okay, lover boy, let me get the broom." She walks out the bathroom.

I dust the hair from the sink onto the floor. I hear talking coming from downstairs and I rush to the kitchen.

"Mom, this is my friend and classmate, Aaliyah. Aaliyah, this is my mom." I say standing in front of Aaliyah.

"Oh, I didn't know you had any company. It's nice meeting you." She says walking around me to shake Aaliyah's hand.

"Nice to meet you too, ma'am." Aaliyah says shaking her hand.

"Please, call me Sarah. Noah what did you do to your hair?" She asks looking at me wildly.

"I wanted a new look." I say running my hands through my hair.

"I like it." She says fixing my hair.

"Thank Aaliyah, she did it." I say looking at Aaliyah.

"Oh, you did wonderful Aaliyah! Where'd you learn?" She asks sitting down on the island.

"My dad. He taught me how to shape up his hairline and once I started to do my brothers he taught me how to taper the sides. I do both my brother and fathers hair." She says going to sit next to my mother.

"You know, I used to cut your father's hair, Noah." My mom says looking over at me.

"Really?!" I know nothing about my parents really. Like I said I was ignored and not really acknowledged.

"Yeah, this was back when we didn't have much and your father didn't know how to do his own hair. I used to trim it so it wouldn't go to grow too long. He hated it long. I think he looked his best with longer hair." She says sounding a little nostalgic.

"I think Noah would look great with shoulder length hair and a beard." Aaliyah says looking at me. They both look at me. Envisioning it.

"You know what, yeahhhh. I see it." My mom says smiling.

We continued to talk with my mom and then it was time for Aaliyah to go home.

"It really was lovely meeting you, Aaliyah." My mom says hugging her.

"And you, Sarah." Aaliyah says hugging her back.

"I'll be back, I'm just walking her to her car." I tell my mother and leave.

"I had fun." She says when we reach her car.

"Really? We just spent our time with my mother." I say looking back at our house.

"Yeah, I like your mom. She's cool." She says leaning in to give me a hug.

"That's the most I have ever talked to my mother or heard anything about my parents." I says hugging her back. We stay like this for a while.

"Well, I'm glad I could be of some help." She says letting go of me.

"You always help." I say leading her to the drivers side of her car.
