Pairing: SwapDreamtale Nightmare Sans x Female Reader
Prompt: Nightmare struggles to believe he's accomplished anything of value, believing he's not good enough to be the lone Guardian of the multiverse. Good thing he has (Y/n) to help him see his worth.
Type: hurt/comfort, angsty, romantic
Length: 3.6k words
Background: Since this is a lesser-known AU, I'll give you the quick rundown (as I know it): it's basically the same as Dreamtale, but after the human villagers try to kill Nightmare, Dream's tears combine with a golden apple from the Tree of Feelings to heal Nightmare. Dream eats a ton of the golden apples after a voice like his mother tells him to so 'he can be strong to protect his little brother' (aka so Night won't almost die again), turning him insane and insanely powerful, and to survive, Nightmare eats the last black apple. Now Night needs to kill his brother in order to stop positivity from completely taking over (i.e. maintain the balance of positivity & negativity) since Dream drives people crazy with positivity, but since Nightmare is negativity and nobody likes negativity, it's much more difficult - yet he perseveres despite being deeply traumatized from the villagers and what happened to his older brother.
Notes: If any of that^ was inaccurate, apologies. Information on the AU is scarce, so feel free to give me more info on the lore in the comments. | This was requested by the lovely wwwcocoabits, who wants to give some very overdue therapy to the deeply traumatized Guardian.

It was another day full of sidelong glances and lips pulled back in disgust as they looked at him, and even if Nightmare was used to it by now, today he just couldn't shake it off. Everywhere he went, he was met with negativity and hate, and while part of it was good to help offset the balance Dream was skewing, Nightmare couldn't help but feel bad about it. Nobody liked feeling negativity - negative emotions were 'bad', after all - and despite being the very Guardian to protect such emotions, he couldn't exactly blame them. Everywhere he went, he was a burden, a bad omen, a sign you were in for a bad day. He deserved all the nasty looks, and even though they couldn't understand what he was doing was for their betterment, he sometimes wished they could.

Nightmare held a cigarette to his teeth, watching the purple cloud of negativity drift up into the dark midnight sky. They were special cigarettes designed to help dispel his negativity so he wasn't consumed by it, but on a particularly rough day like today—though it had been a rough month, more accurately—it didn't seem to be helping. He was leaned against the wall of an AU's Grillby's, trying to stay out of the way while taking a short break from his responsibilities. The weight of expectations threatened to crush him, but he tried to remind himself that he needed to take breaks or risk burnout - something a special someone had told him.

"Nightmare?" His head shot up in surprise to see (Y/n) waving her hand in front of her face to clear the purple cloud of smoke, smiling despite her sudden influx of negative emotions. Panic lit up his purple eyelights as he quickly ground the cigarette into the brick wall he was leaned against.

"Sorry moonlight," he said quickly, the words practically tripping over themselves in a rush to get out. The smoke cloud had the ability to influence the emotions of anybody that breathed it in due to it being pure negativity, and this wasn't the first time he'd accidentally covered someone in the purple smoke while distracted. He was just ashamed it happened to be his best - and only - friend.

(Y/n)'s small smile relaxed at the nickname, her (e/c) eyes warm as the cloud around them dissipated. The smoke combined with his own negative aura was strong, yet the normally stoic girl wasn't so easily swayed. It astounded him every time she managed to resist how easily his very presence made her negative, like something about being around him just made her inherently happy - but that wasn't right. Nobody liked being around him.
