Pairing: Demon! XTale/Cross Sans x Summoner! Female Reader
Prompt: With your father getting old, he summons you a demon bodyguard to protect you long after he's gone.
Type: sweet, romantic, badass Royal Guard Cross, near death experience
Length: 4.8k words
Background: It'll be helpful to have read His Summoner since the whole demon/summoner thing is based on the lore of that book, but I do break down what you need to know throughout this one-shot like you've never heard any of this. Demons are summoned by humans and bound to soul contracts that the demon cannot violate, and the demons are pulled from different universes to serve humans - thus summoning is a profession. | Cross has never been summoned before so the fiasco with Chara never happened (think of it as the Cross before the events of Underverse).
Notes: Requested by a lovely reader. | I swear I do want to do y'all's requests but the inspiration for them isn't always there and sometimes I have to come up with the plots myself (i.e. I'm given a concept, like Cross being your demon, but no plot to accompany it) so it takes longer, and as I've said a million times, I'm super busy. In other words, I'm sorry I'm slow 😭

Cross liked to claim that the point of a bodyguard was to go unnoticed by the person they were guarding but not anybody else - like a dominating presence to dissuade anyone from trying anything. (Y/n) agreed with him only because she was so used to his sticking to her side that she forgot he was there most of the time, and his protectiveness was such a constant blanket of protection over her it had become part of an unchanging norm. Cross was first summoned into her family by her father after her mother's passing with the demon's sole purpose being to protect his little girl long after he was gone. (Y/n) knew it was coming - both of her parents were old, after all, and with her being their only child, it only made sense Dad's thoughts went to the child he'd leave behind in this dangerous world.

So he summoned Cross - the perfect demonic bodyguard - to protect her. She formed the soul contract with Cross, binding his very soul to hers under the traditional summoner's contract that specified protection of the summoner above all else, and when his servitude was up and (Y/n) was laid next to her father and mother in the earth, he would be automatically sent back to the universe he was summoned from. Cross took his job seriously, ever the ideal of poise and stoic guardianship, and she wondered if he was some sort of royal guard back home to look after her so dutifully.

(Y/n) leaned back into Cross' chest, feeling him stiffen with surprise as his hands jolted on the hilts of the twin daggers attached to his hips. He stood uneasily for a moment, unsure of what to do, and he felt her sigh as she looked back at him. "Waiting for the client is so boring," she muttered, seeing his expression relax some as his fingers wrapped around the handles of his daggers snugly.

"Are you certain you are prepared for the summoning, summoner?" She checked her summoning circle - which had been drawn on the ground with white chalk - and each of the candles that were lit around its outer edge, then she turned the book over in her hands. It was a ritual book specifically for higher ranked demons - like the highest denomination of Demon Kings - though the client today only wanted a Demon Lord, which was a step below a King.

"Everything's set up and Dad taught me all the little details about summoning a Lord so we should be good." Her smile was warm as she leaned back into Cross' chest, and he stood like a wall to support her.

"Dad would be most proud of you," he said, his tone as resolute as him. This was her first summoning without her dad around, and though she'd known for some time her dad was going to follow shortly after her mother, it still felt odd to be doing this without him.

"I really hope so," (Y/n) whispered. Cross looked down at her, sympathy passing through his white eyelights, and he hesitated a moment before setting his hand on her shoulder.
