Pairing: Shattered Dream Sans x Female Reader
Prompt: (Y/n) believes nobody is beyond help and makes it her life mission to help them by being a psychiatrist. Shattered wants to see how long it takes to break her naïve mind down, and maybe if she succumbs, he'll reward her for making the right choice.
Type: smut
Length: 4.8k words
Background: Dream and (Y/n) have history, as they knew each other before the events of the story and were good friends. She knows about Nightmare and the purpose of Dream/Nightmare being to maintain the balance of positivity/negativity in the multiverse.
Notes: I embrace how toxic as well as downright evil Shattered is so warning for toxicity throughout (and since it's his POV it's gonna be everywhere). I'm slightly too good at writing toxicity and manipulation to just file it under being a good writer, should I be worried about that...?

Shattered stepped into the quaint office with his hands behind his back, gaze flickering around the room - though he knew exactly what it would look like before he stepped inside. As he expected, a young woman was waiting for him with a soft smile and kind eyes, and she gestured to the seat across from her. "Dream, it's lovely to see you again!" Her voice was as sweet as her, and it elicited a quiet scoff from him too quiet for her to hear.

"Yes, a joy, I am certain." Shattered sat down in the offered seat, mimicking Dream's kingly pose of crossing one leg over the other and knitting his fingers together over his knee, veiling his disgust with the weak positivity guardian's mannerisms. But it was a necessity, of course, as he was in the form of Dream and (Y/n) knew Dream quite well. They'd convened in this office many a time with the goal of helping Dream through his trauma regarding the incident with his brother Nightmare all those years ago, and since Shattered was given all of Dream's memories when he took over his vessel, he knew all of their history.

"Have you given any thought to what I said in our last session?" (Y/n) asked, her composure professional as she poised a pen over a notepad in her hands. The gray walls were the definition of drab, complimenting such a bland office perfectly - there was a potted plant in the corner, her desk pushed into the wall and chair turned towards him, and he was sat in a comfy lounge chair that Dream spent more time staring at than the psychiatrist trying to help him. (Y/n) had told him once she didn't get many patients, attributing it to being new to the practice - she only recently graduated with her degree so she was still making a name for herself - but Shattered saw through that farce. She was full of hot air and hope, a flimsy shield to the reality of the world that Dream tried so hard to ignore before he couldn't do it any longer and finally broke, leading to Shattered's eventual release. And just like Dream, he'd break (Y/n) too.

"I have," Shattered said slowly, a cruel grin curving his teeth. He felt a flash of unease ripple through her at the unnatural expression on Dream's face, but she nodded all the same, waiting for him to continue. "If I recall, you told me that in order to truly understand another's pain, you must experience what they have been through. We were speaking about my brother Nightmare and how I wished I could understand his pain back then, as I had assumed if I could simply understand him, our relationship would be repaired."

(Y/n) nodded readily to show he had her full attention, expression inviting so he'd feel at ease. "Exactly. You'll never truly understand anybody else's pain, but you can better sympathize by putting yourself in their shoes. You can't understand what your brother went through growing up but you can do your best to be there for him now." How foolish. Shattered had to stop himself from rolling his eyelights. Nightmare wanted nothing to do with Dream - as if that hadn't been made abundantly clear over the centuries the two of them had lived - yet Dream still clung to the delusion they could be brothers again.
