"Come on, (Y/n), please!" the boy begged theatrically on his knees, hands clasped as if in prayer, and eyebrows knit together to express how badly he wanted his plea answered. I was starting to get stares - and by starting to, I mean everybody in the grocery store was staring at us - and I glared at Danny and whispered through grit teeth to stand like a mother on the verge of smacking her child for acting out in public. "I won't stop until you go with us!" His smile turned playful but my glare only deepened.
"There's no such thing as ghosts. You're asking me to waste my limited free time with you and your older brother running around an abandoned house pretending we're meeting spirits and scaring ourselves for a cheap thrill. You realize how stupid that sounds, right?"
"Ghosts are real!" Danny got to his feet - finally - and pointed at me while the other arm crossed over his chest. "And when they turn that skepticism to belief, I'll be saying 'I told you so'."
"Right." I turned back to the bread aisle I was perusing before he interrupted me, and he let out a deep sigh as our audience finally grew bored and returned to their shopping. "Did you come with me on my errands solely to ask me to join you tonight?"
He gaped at me before placing a hand on his chest. "I wanted to spend time with you too."
"Right." The sarcasm was barely detectable over all my disinterest.
"You need to lighten up, (Y/n)."
"And you need to realize that pretending to hunt ghosts with David won't make him think you're cool or tough."
"Hey, it's super cool and tough to go to a clearly haunted house." He pouted, earning an unamused lift to my eyebrows. Seeming to realize the irony, he flushed red and crossed his arms tightly, trying to mold his expression into the peak of toughness with a scowl that just didn't fit his soft, baby-like features.
"You're going to the Old Crow?" I didn't look away from the bread in my hand but I felt his eyes widen.
"I thought you didn't know anything about haunted houses."
"Everyone knows about that place - realist or fanatic. I've seen people running scared for their lives out the front door on multiple occasions, claiming a ghost touched them or pulled their hair." My eyes couldn't roll far enough back in my skull as I set the bread down in the cart and continued pushing it through the store.
Danny's excitement couldn't be contained, and he practically skipped alongside me - much to my embarrassment and amusement of the other shoppers. "So you know the stories?"
"I know they claim ghosts are there even though it's nothing more than an abandoned house left to rot in the middle of the city. I also know they've given up on walling off the property because 'ghost hunters' keep sneaking in anyway, and everyone claims the owner is a ghost themself."
"So you don't know about the murders?" Danny suddenly became serious, and I glanced at him.
"Murders?"
"They say a family of 6 was murdered within those very walls, and they still haunt the residence to this day." His attempt to throw theatrical terror into his voice wasn't very convincing, and at my deadpan look, he dropped it in favor of earnestness. "They never caught the guy that did it - they say it was the father suffering a psychotic break. He took the ax from the shed for chopping wood to chop his family to pieces."
