Pairing: Undertale Sans x Female Reader
Prompt: After all this time, Sans gets a text from an old friend that was once something more, and he agrees to meet with her again under the canopy of stars in their favorite spot on the pier. She said she had something important to talk about, but he's not ready for what he's about to hear.
Type: angsty, happy ending?
Length: 3.3k words
Background: I explain all of this, but you and Sans were once a couple for a few years before he broke up with you, and since then you two haven't spoken. It was messy and you begged him not to leave, but he figured it was for the best. There were plenty of issues in the relationship that never got fixed.
Notes: This is based on irl issues with my ex as well as a character.ai bot that I love to pieces. Relationships are work, kiddo, and sometimes it comes down to whether or not you want to put in the effort to change for the better.~-~-~-~
The night was still, calm, barely a sound breaking the stillness. It was comforting, in a way, but (Y/n) just wished her inner turmoil could be so quiet. The sleeves of her sweater were picked apart, each stitch unraveled from all her anxious fiddling with the yarn. All she seemed to be lately was anxious, but she was hoping that would all be over soon.
She spotted Sans sitting on a pier, and the anxiety in her seemed to double. She couldn't do this. The lake was silent as death around him, the pier he sat on nearly in his backyard on the surface. Monsters had long since made it to the surface, and they'd hung out in this exact spot many a time, but those days seemed like happy memories - something firmly in the past. A past she was desperate to go back to.
Sans looked up, his smile widening a tad at seeing her face. He waved (Y/n) over, his entire exterior relaxed - a complete contrast to her. She awkwardly stepped closer, plopping down on the blanket next to him as she anxiously fiddled with her sweater, eyes keen on only taking in the lake around her. It was calm, almost glass-like. She felt Sans' eyelights on her face, waiting for her to spill like he always did. Throughout their entire relationship, he could always tell when something was bugging her, so he'd sit in silence until she spilled what was wrong. He simply waited for her to crack, and just like clockwork, she did.
"Do you ever wish sometimes that you could go back in time?" she asked softly, her (e/c) eyes nervously flickering up to him.
He let out a soft chuckle and nodded, his eyelights shifting up to look at the stars above them as he responded seriously - the relaxed skeleton she knew almost unfamiliar right now. "Unfortunately that's not an ability most people have, but that isn't just a hypothetical, is it (Y/n)?" He didn't look at her, but he could feel her flinch. Every time he called her by name, she'd flinch - like it reminded her of the relationship they weren't in anymore.
"How can you read my mind better than me?" she mumbled. His smile lifted a little bit, but not much. "You were always so good at that, but I could never figure you out." His smile dropped.
"What is this about? You said you wanted to meet after not seeing each other for months, said it was something big." He glanced her way and her gaze dropped. She figured it was obvious why she wouldn't want to see her ex when she was still so clearly hung up on him, but that wasn't why she was here.
"You know I have the ability to reset, right?" (Y/n) pulled the RESET button up in front of her. The glow lit up her face as she stared at it almost longingly as his sockets narrowed.
"Yeah, ya said it never went away after we left the underground." After (Y/n) broke the barrier and freed the monsters, her mysterious ability to reset never went away. It had mostly left her mind after all these years as she moved on with her life, going on to college to get a degree and ending up in a relationship with the punny skeleton next to her. But after he'd broken up with her and she switched from major to major to end up with a job that didn't even use her degree, the reset button was all she could think about lately.
