Pairing: Dream Sans x Female Reader
Prompt: Your birthday is coming up, so pulling some strings, Dream arranges a surprise party for you. And that's exactly how it would've gone if things ever went according to plan.
Type: joke-fic vibes (don't take this too seriously), birthday shenanigans, it plays out like a comedy skit
Length: 3k words
Background: If you weren't aware, Dream can feel the emotions of the people around him (empathy but dialed to 11, basically). It's not something he can just turn off, so it would be like your mom's bad mood forcing your own to tank too (...wait, that's already how it works-)
Notes: Requested by the lovely Sapphire_ghost_lover.~-~-~-~
A life debt is not a debt easily repaid – the name implies servitude for the rest of yours to whoever saved it, like a devotion of the highest order, for without them, you wouldn't be here anymore. Though to no one's surprise, Dream wasn't exactly the type to deem such a thing necessary. He and the other Star Sanses saved your life – in fact, they saved your entire AU from Error, who intended to rip its code apart and condemn everyone inside to decimation – yet they were surprised when you turned around and offered them your undying devotion and aid in whatever way they wanted. You would be their loyal servant, at their beck and call for the rest of your life, yet at such an offer, they weren't sure what to do.
Well, Ink was sure, the other two tried to convince you that maybe you should take a step back – you did almost die so you probably weren't fully rational yet. You had just recently fallen into the underground so you weren't even fully aware of all the lives they'd saved stopping Error, but you knew it was a lot and that was enough for you. If you were completely honest with yourself, you barely survived the Ruins, so maybe it was a ploy to get yourself out of harm's way as much as it was to pay them back for saving your AU.
Either way, Ink welcomed you aboard and you'd been with the Stars ever since. It was like a dream come true – though you could only use that pun so many times around Dream to express your gratitude – and you felt you truly belonged among the Stars. Ink made full use of your services, Swap used your help to train and in exchange he taught you the secret to making amazing tacos – spoiler alert: it was glitter – and Dream came to you when he had an especially bad day. Dream was an empath of the highest degree, so his mood was affected directly by those around him. You were always happy to be near him so it was like a guarantee of a positive mood to be around his favorite person, and for a while, that's all you two pretended it was.
Dream knew how you felt – he literally felt how you felt, it was kinda impossible not to – and with your birthday fast approaching, he decided that the best way to ask you out was amidst gifts, party favors, and a surprise party planned top to bottom. It seemed like a silly thing in the moment - being asked what day your birth was during the 'hiring process' of being onboarded onto the team - but call it blissful ignorance, you didn't recall even telling the Stars about your birthday when the day actually came around. Maybe because there were much bigger things going on – AU ending, positivity/negativity balance shifting, universe-level catastrophe stuff – and a birthday of all things seemed inconsequential in comparison. Besides, it wasn't like you were used to having it celebrated anyways, and to think the Star Sanses would care to put their plans on hold just for you seemed crazy. Not even Error would believe he was more important than his duty, and the Stars' duty was actually worth fulfilling.
So when you mentioned wanting to visit your AU again, Dream all but jumped on the opportunity to send you there. You'd never made it through the underground, but with all your experience gained working for the Stars, you felt confident taking it on. It would take you several days to break the barrier and reach the surface, giving the monsters the happy ending they deserved, but it would be worth it. So Dream brought you back, telling you he'd come pick you up in a couple weeks and not to worry about the three of them in the meantime.
