Pairing: Error Sans x Female Reader
Prompt: Despite (Y/n)'s bad social anxiety and anthropophobia, she agrees to a hangout with her friend's friends in an effort to work on her phobia. But when things go wrong, she runs to Error for help - just like she did that traumatic night.
Type: angsty trauma, free therapy, happy ending
Length: 5.6k words
Background: Anthropophobia = the fear of people | If you're unaware of Error's backstory, here's the short version: he was a Geno that got free from the Save Screen, experimented with dangerous determination magic (despite Sans' warnings) and accidentally sent himself to the anti-void, where he goes insane, basically cursing everyone up, down, left, right, and center because - despite getting his happy ending as Geno - he got screwed over in the end.
Notes: Trigger Warning: there'll be heavily implied attempted grape of the Reader (talked about in the past tense and referenced throughout). | Requested by the lovely Sapphire_ghost_lover.~-~-~-~
(Y/n) paced in the entryway to her front door, wringing her hands out nonstop as she did her best not to mess with her hair. She'd put at least an hour into making sure her appearance was perfect for tonight, and if she messed anything up, it had a chance of ruining everything. Steps outside the front door preceded a couple brisk knocks, and she threw open the door to see Kanako waiting on the other side with an easy smile. Kanako had waist-length black hair that faded to purple at the ends, blue/green eyes, fair skin, and she always seemed perfectly at ease—or maybe that was just in comparison to (Y/n)'s lack of ease in social situations.
"Hey (Y/n), you look amazing!" She pulled the frazzled girl into a hug, making (Y/n) squeak with surprise at how easily Kanako touched her. She'd gotten so used to being around Error that she forgot humans frequently touched each other during social interaction—though she'd barely been around anyone more than a minute at most, but that was by design. She couldn't handle social interaction to save her life, and even being in the presence of other people triggered her anxiety like nothing else. It sounded stupid to admit even to herself that she had anthropophobia—the fear of people—but then that was why Kanako was here in the first place: to get (Y/n) out of the house and into a social setting to help her work on her phobia. She was an adult, and as her long-time friend, Kanako suggested taking (Y/n) out to meet some of her other friends at one of the guy's houses so it could be in a controlled setting. Kanako promised that all of her friends were chill and knew about (Y/n)'s phobia, and though (Y/n) insisted they shouldn't treat her any differently, she wondered if it was for the best that they would.
"Are you sure they'll like me?" (Y/n) asked, wringing her hands out nervously. Her skin was bright red from the stress of constantly rubbing her hands and wrists for hours.
Kanako grabbed her hands to still them, holding them to her chest as she looked her friend in the eyes. "How long have we been friends, hmm? Years? You really think I'd bring you to a function where I know my friends wouldn't like you?" Logically (Y/n) knew that, but her anxious mind didn't quiet. Kanako read her like a book and sighed, tilting her head as she smiled almost mischievously. "Hey, worst case scenario, you've got a reason to talk to that guy you were telling me about. What was his name again?"
(Y/n)'s face lit up in a blush as she pried her hands from Kanako's, covering her cheeks in shame as she stuttered out a response that barely classified as English. "I barely mentioned Error!" Texting was a lot more manageable than talking on the phone or in person—which is how Kanako even knew about Error—so that was mostly how she kept in contact with her very few contacts like Kanako. Kanako had been putting in the legwork to get (Y/n) more comfortable with both talking on the phone and in person hangouts leading up to this get together with her friends both because she was such a great, long-standing friend of (Y/n)'s and because she was going on to become a therapist and affectionately labeled (Y/n) her 'passion project'. (Y/n) didn't feel deserving of all the attention—something she confessed to Error while the two of them were mutually complaining about the struggles of having such similar phobias—but Error said she might as well use Kanako's good will to get something out of it.
