Pairing: Passive Nightmare Sans x Reader
Prompt: How much impact could one friend have?
Type: angsty (Passive's childhood), anger inducing, hurt/comfort
Length: 7.6k words
Background: If you don't know Dreamtale lore, the Tree of Feelings that the boys (Passive Nightmare and Dream) protect is located just outside of a village - a village of humans that routinely used Dream for his positive gifts and bullied & hurt Nightmare because of the perceived bad luck/misfortune he brought on them due to his negativity. | Nightmare pre-corruption is referred to as 'Passive' typically (whereas goopy, tentacle-y, corrupted Nightmare is just 'Nightmare').
Notes: I wanted to take a look at how Passive could possibly avoid his fate of eating the apple & how the villagers mob mentality against him would affect a potential friend - i.e. take a deep dive into the psychology behind it. I thought it would end up being long (and it was) and my friend Zeneroa helped me out with compiling information & giving me ideas - she's the best. Enjoy my interpretation of kids talking because the stilted dialogue is very, uh, elementary. (It's intentional since the narrator - you - is a child so how you see the world is reflective of that but oof)
These take a lot of time outside of just writing the first draft (and even then, at my average speed of 1,500 words/hour, it took 5 hours alone just to write out this first draft), but Passive deserves more love. Tho with college/work/all that added stress, it's dropped to a more consistent 1,000 words/hour, with things like mature writing taking longer and editing tacking on an hour or two. You underestimate how long it takes authors to work on stuff and the incredible amount of stress it adds to my plate just to work on passion projects like this. So be nice to authors, yeah? Be nice to everyone, honestly, but especially people that are spending their freetime to give you free content to enjoy.~-~-~-~
It was a beautiful day outside - birds were singing, flowers were blooming - and on days like these, kids like you were found outside in the grass reading a book called Fluffy Bunny. As a 5 year old, you could read the whole book by yourself without help - a fact your parents were more than proud to tell the other parents in the village. You showed off your talent to anyone willing to listen, receiving ample praise from all the villagers. It wasn't a big village so such a small accomplishment was big news, and even Dream had visited you once to let you read to him. You didn't see him often since the other villagers kept him busy due to his positivity - though you couldn't begin to understand how any of that worked, you were told he was like a superhero due to his positivity powers - and while you enjoyed playing with him the couple handful of times you could, he didn't get much time to play.
You pulled some green grass from around the book in front of you, flat on your stomach as your feet kicked in the air. The sun kept you warm, and though you weren't by the tree up on the hill, the view was still pretty good. From this angle, you were able to see a young boy in purple approaching you. He looked just like Dream but dressed in purple instead, and the crown on his skull was a moon instead. He was fiddling with his fingers nervously as he came closer, and at your curious gaze, he waved.
"Hi. I'm (Y/n), what's your name?" you asked.
"I am Nightm- um, Nighty." He awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck and stopped next to you, his awkwardness carrying a strong enough aura that you could feel it.
Your mood soured some at his approach though you couldn't say why, but you didn't let that dampen your mood as you smiled. "Did you know I can read this entire book by myself?"
His sockets widened. "You can?"
"Yeah, watch!" You flipped open Fluffy Bunny to start from the first page, beginning to read before you glanced up at him. "You can sit down, you know."
