The baby gurgled in its cradle and drew Annette 's attention. She picked him up in her arms and sang to him.At once he drifted into sleep. She needed time to find out why Harry was being evasive.
It was afternoon when she drew the curtains and went into Harry's room.
She searched his coat pockets and found a note.'Meet me at Carvins'.
She looked into the drawers but couldn't find anything.
" Mom the baby is asleep ,I need to go into the market please keep an eye till I return", she said.
" Of course darling, now be off and don't worry about a thing."said Mrs Hobson.
Annette pulled on a coat and got into her Buick taking off quickly. She stopped at the supermarket and picking up diapers asked the attendant," How far is Carvin from here?" .
" Oh it's two miles from here behind the public library." answered the attendant.
She drove again passing the cafeteria.
She parked her car some distance away and walked to the cafeteria.
It was well lit with a chandelier in the centre and several tables and chairs behind glass windows.
Annette sat at a table behind a pillar and looked around. There were many people all engaged in the best treats available.
A waiter came and took her order, " Blackcoffee," she said.
Few minutes ticked by and two ladies
entered. She recognised Anastasia with an unknown face. She looked away and pulled her cowl closer around her face. They sat near to the entrance. They seemed to be engrossed in a conversation. Then the latter took out photographs and showed it to Anastasia who exclaimed alarmingly loud. This drew the attention of the customers in the cafeteria.Annette bent pretending to pick up something. They were engaged in a deep conversation. The black coffee arrived. The waiter delivered some savouries at their table which they barely noticed.
It was getting late and she had to leave. At that moment Anastasia got up and left.Five minutes passed and then a shadow fell .A stout man wearing heavy boots and a coat joined the lady sitting at the table.
She pushed an envelope to him which he accepted nodding his head. Then they both left.Seeing that the coast was clear Annette got out of the cafeteria.
