Jan 26: Write a story set entirely in a cage

"If you move an inch, I'll devour you as well," Lion said and bared his teeth at Wolf.
Wolf scowled and retreated. Lion trotted over to the piece of meat that was placed in the middle of the cage.
"You know that you're actually farming yourself in the process right?"
"Hmm?" Lion looked up at me with a piece of the meat dangling from his mouth.
"The humans. They're feeding you so that you'll get bigger and grow stronger so you'd provide everything they need when it's time for them to kill you."
The piece of meat fell from Lion's mouth and landed on the cage floor.
He narrowed his eyes at me.
"But we will all die one day. Including humans. So I believe they're just feeding us so we can live longer–"
"Why don't you see humans in cages then?" I asked.
"I do! They're much bigger than ours and humans are usually dressed in orange colours," Dog stated.
"That's a prison!" I huffed impatiently. "They don't keep them there to eat them–"
"Humans do eat each other," Cow said from the corner.
I sighed.
"And we do eat humans too," Lion said and gulped the last piece of meat.
I pursed my lips.
"Yes, it has been established that humans eat us and we also eat them but we should be all aware that plants are also a huge threat to both of us," Owl said from a dark spot behind the cage.
"What the hell you talking about?" Panther mummured.
"And what are you doing awake by this time Owl? it's ten in the morning!" Horse exclaimed and we all burst out into laughter.
Owl wasn't intimidated.
"For years, I've been learning. I've learnt that we give out Carbon dioxide when we respire–"
"Oh my goodness, another lesson..." Pig groaned.
"And we take in oxygen because we need it to survive. And plants do the opposite. So...they are actually giving us oxygen to live and grow so if we die, we'd give them enough body parts to absorb when we decompose."
The cage was silent for a minute.
"So it's actually a giant food web. Plants and animals are consuming each other and themselves," I concluded.
"So, moral lesson. Don't complain about food. Just eat and live as long as you can," Lion said beaming.
"Speaking of that," I began and signalled the rest of the animals.
"What's going on?" Lion said and started to retreat when he noticed that we were all advancing towards him.
Well, actually I stayed behind and covered my eyes meanwhile, Wolf, Fox and the other menacing animals devoured Lion.
"Are y'all done?" I asked and peeked out from the space between my paws.
Wolf walked away from the crowd that had gathered around Lion's carcass and licked his lips.
"That was one satisfying meal," he howled and winked at me before sauntering off.
I purred and retreated to a corner of the cage, suddenly guilty for planning the whole ambush.
But Lion always harassed us and stole our meals. He deserved this.
Anyways, everyone of us was still going to die in the end. Every living thing would still... perish.
